Breaking news that Mascherano has been sentenced to 1 year in jail in Spain for tax evasion

What is wrong with these guys, they earn all this money and then can't even get a good accountant or are they all doing their own self-assessment

  3. Well, at 31 years old, I guess that's his career ****ed. Unless he gets out in three months on good behaviour!

First sentence from Google: "The former Liverpool player will not go to prison due to laws in Spain but he has been ordered to pay a hefty fine"

    All stand down
Just come out of court and they have accepted his offer to pay a hefty fine instead

    Javier says

"After my arrival at Barcelona, I signed up with a prestigious company with an excellent reputation. They made recommendations to me which, I was informed, were procedurally normal, transparent, and accepted by law.

"I was advised by them from 2010 until 2014, when I decided to change companies, because of the legal process that was opened against me.

"My new advisors recommended to pay the taxes [that were ruled to be outstanding]. Now, finally, and after a bitter wait, we have reached this agreement, which makes me calm about having my financial situation in order once again."

I see Mascherano has been sentenced to a year in prison for tax fraud, but will probably avoid it by paying a fine of £625,000. So about 7 weeks wages.

Not sure about this, I don't want the guy to go to prison (especially if he genuinely didn't know the ins and outs and thought he was doing things legally)

BUT - how can you be given 12 months jail time and then say "no it's ok judge, we'll just pay a load more in fines instead if that's cool?"

Surely if your a billionaire your immune from jail in that case? (Prob not too far away from the truth anyway tbf)

Spanish law allows fines for non-violent crimes with sentences of less than 2 years

Looks like Masher could be facing jail time for fraud and tax evasion.

He's admitted to tax evasion and fraud and is fighting in court now to avoid going to jail. He's hoping to pay a fine instead.

Because he's rich and famous he'll probably get away with it too.

Was a wonderful player... Could do with him now, but apparently he has a dodgy side. Who would have imagined a pro footballer with a dodgy side?
