There's already Debenhams, House of Fraser and M&S in Hull, when Princes Quay was built they definitely should have got John Lewis as the anchor tenant, but at the time there was already and Allders department store (now Primark) and they didn't think it could carry both (that was obviously a mistake, Allders was never anchor tenant material). Sadly, it's now too late, the momentum has been lost at Prinny Quay and it's only realistic hope of resurrection is as an outlet centre, though it needs quality outlet stores, not more Poundland ****e.
Didn't know that, never seen any of them. Are they proper sized department stores? John Lewis snubbed in favour of Primark That just about sums it up.
It's quite hard to miss House of Fraser, it's ****ing massive... please log in to view this image Ditto Debenhams... please log in to view this image M&S isn't a particularly big one... please log in to view this image It was well over a decade after Princes Quay opened that Allders went bust and Primark opened in it's place.
With the need for city centre retail in decline and the void being taken up by culture and leisure shouldn't we have had a more renaissance vision to demolish Princes Quay and build the proposed shiny new Hull Arena overlooking the dock from the western quayside with bars, restaurants and galleries linking around to the Ferens revamp and a selection of Hull ships like the Arctic Corsair and a Bounty and Lincoln Castle replica in the water?
and if you think that Beverley is thriving take a look at how many charity shops there are - take these away and it wouldn't look very different to a lot of other places.
Beverley doesn't have charity shops in it's prime locations, they're generally just in secondary hard to let sites and I'm not suggesting everything in Beverley is brilliant, I think the new Flemingate development is fairly ****.
You're seriously suggesting that someone should buy a £100m shopping centre, then demolish it? It should never have been built there, but now it's there, it's obviously not going anywhere.
It's a shadow of it's former self, but is about to be relaunched as a branded outlet centre. It was bought last year by a Saudi owned investment bank and they brought in Realm to oversee the switch, they already operate 13 outlet centres across the UK, including the new London Outlet Centre next door to Wembley (and for locals, they also run Junction 32 at Castleford).
It was bought last year, it was on the market for £110m, but I've no idea what it ended up going for.
There's no such thing as Hammonds any more, it was bought by House Of Fraser in 1972 and though it has variously used the names Binns and Hammonds over the intervening years, it's just called House Of Fraser now.
Mi scusi. But, being a bit thick, I can't understand why, if there is no such thing as Hammond's, then why did you put "Hammonds is House of Fraser"? Is there no such thing as House of Fraser any more?
Hammonds and House Of Fraser are one and the same, some people still refer to it as Hammonds, even though it now trades as House Of Fraser.
It took my mum years to stop calling it Hammonds, she calls it Binns now. Don't think she'll ever manage House of Fraser.
My mum still calls it Hammonds, she refused to ever recognise the name change to Binns (she used to be a hairdresser in there in the early 60's).
