Joey Barton - Linked with Spurs? your opinions?

    http://www.spurs.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=7509474

Also He Tweeted - Nice to be linked with some big clubs today but I honestly don't want to leave Newcastle. Thanks but no thanks. #unfinishedbusinesshere.

Then 5Minutes Later - I will most likely leave Newcastle at end of season, when my contract expires and I am no longer employed. Its out of my hands #iwanttostay?

  3. I wish people would stop bricking their pants when **** like this comes up. Barton said that there's no way he's being sold, so the fat **** can accept any bid he wants, if Barton chooses not to go, he wont be leaving.

Pardew has said they're going to try and sort a deal out over the season regarding his contract, or something along those lines, hopefully it gets sorted.

...because Spurs really need more midfielders

And if they sold Modric for 35m+, I think their fans would be expecting a more expensive (and younger) player than Joey to come in

Need to keep him, had the best pre season of anyone at the club so far. 3 goals in 3 games and Utrecht aren't a bad team either.

Barton is here for the season. I've no doubt whatsoever about that. What happens after that is anyones guess. A year is a long time in football.

Think it will get soted eventually, as I think he wants to stay and Pardew wants to keep him.

  9. I wish the fat bastard would just give him a 4 year contract. People should stop looking at the age, and look at the player more carefully. Nolan i fully understand not giving a long contract because his fitness isn't that great and his legs probably only have a few years left.

Barton is in great shape and is in his best form now! Some players aren't in their peak until their 30's and go on to play until 37-40!

I reckon Barton could still be playing for another 5-7 years easily. He's 28 going on 29. In 4 more years he's be 33 going on 34. That's still not ancient. Hopefully the fat **** will see how important he is to the team and offer him a 3/4 year contract that he deserves.

I don't think there's any risk either in giving him a four year deal. He could easily play well into his mid-30's. I have no concerns regarding off the field antics either in giving him a four year deal, he's really cleaned up his act and deserves credit for how he's turned his life around. He's kept his nose clean off the field and no red cards for over two years on the pitch (only slip was v Blackburn but Rooney escaped doing far far worse).

  11. Yep. I'd personally offer Barton a 3 year contract with the option of a 4th.

I agree in that there are no risks in giving him a 4 year deal, however, I do think that the board are right in offering shorter deals for older players. Maybe a 3 year deal for Barton as Tash has said with a rolling yearly contract after that?!

  14. I don't like it when people say players are old when they're around 30. You're only as young as you feel. Barton and Nolan are the same age on paper, but Barton is much younger fitness and ability wise.

When they sign Modric, Nasri, Barton and Sjnider (can't spell his name) they'll have a pretty good midfield......

You are right but as people get older the decline speeds up and I think that the board are doing the right thing, for the majority of players it will be the right decision but every now and then there will be players that probably will go on for longer but we can't break our policies just for these people - Barton is on a fair whack and he may not (may well do as well) be a first teamer in 3/4 years time and will not justify this wage. By the looks of things our board has said this is how much we are going to spend a year on wages and not a penny more, and if Bartons wages have an impact on future transfers then the contract we offered was fair for both parties and if Barton and you are that confident he will still be top notch in 3/4 years then he should have no qualms accepting a shorter contract as he will know in a couple of years that he will still be playing well enough to warrant another contract

Thats a maybe but theres no guarantee whatsoever he'll still have that fitness and ability in 4 years time. For every Nobby Solano still playing at 36 theres half a dozen Alan Smiths who we're happy to see the back of at nearly 31. Theres a chance Barton might still be playing at a high standard at 34, but theres also every chance he'll be worse than Nicky Butt. We've spent years paying wages of the likes of Owen and Viduka at similar ages, its actually a nice change to take a leaf out of Arsenes book for once.

Offer him two years, and if he's still good enough after that then he'll get an extension. Only reason he'd turn it down would be because he's well aware he might not be worth what he's being offered by then, and make a Nolan-esque move to a gambling club to secure his future playing or not.

I can see why we're reluctant to give Barton a long deal (even though I think he'll be fine for around 4 more years), but surely Barton understands the risk and should accept a shorter deal? If we gave him a 2 year deal and he was still playing well we'd offer him another, he just wants the security of a long term deal.

  20. I personally think 3 years with a 1 year rolling contract would be acceptable to Barton, but it's also his wages. Even though we know fine well that Barton earns his wages and then some, Fat **** Ashley want's to save his cash.

I don't give a **** what people think is sensible in this situation. It will not help the club if we aren't as good without Barton, regardless if we're saving 50-60k a week in wages or not.

Barton gives you your moneys worth.
