And let's face it. Andy Carroll never has injuries does he. He's sore that he spent over the odds on a player who has real injury problems as well as the IQ of a gnat when he could have had Charlie for £4.5m with add-ons to reflect the so-called risk. I' wonder whether he has to pay add ons for Andy Carroll pr perhaps he did nt' have the brains to insert that when negotiating the deal to bring him to East London.

The add ons are like small print. No-one bothers with them at the time of the transfer but they can be significant. Everyone thought we'd done terribly selling Sterling to Liverpool for a million. Paladini even felt the need to go public on how he'd tried to buy Sterling a house to get him to stay. But when Liverpool sold him for £50 million and we got our 20 %, the deal didn't look so bad. It may even be the reason we didn't sell Charlie last summer. I think Lee Hoos is pretty shrewd with Tony's money, and I'd be surprised if the Charlie deal is as one-sided as advertised. I don't believe it happened overnight either. Caulker's return was clearly part of it.

on one Saints forum someone says Charlie attended the last couple of games, probably the injury that has kept him of late was bull. Anyway, Good Luck Charlie:emoticon-0137-clapp

Delighted to get Charlie, he scored probably the best goal at SMS in recent times. He seems a good Southern lad too. I hope that you get a decent replacement, Gayle would tear up the Championship and Roofe would be low risk signing,

Disappointed but not surprised. Disappointed I didn't get to see him play over Xmas. Not surprised given the proposed contract he turned down from QPR. If reports are accurate (and my memory is not always accurate), he was offered a new deal for $45k/week; Saints is significantly higher AND gets him back to the Prem. In his 2.5 years with us, he provided much entertainment and many important goals. Sorry to see him go, but hoping someone else steps up - Polter or A N Other. (I've assumed JET has exploded and won't be a part of the future).

    Good luck Charlie.

Depends on what the add on is. Performances, sell on fee, or a combo of all of these. They don't always work out for the seller or the buyer or the player for that matter. Look at Adel T or Robert Green for that matter. I just don't understand the Caulker link though unless it is to the effect of "Remind me. Who does that big guy play for? I wonder if they have another one." I can't see why else someone who has been a terrible signing almost wherever he's played should influence the purchase. Also, why on earth would we want him back?

I would have thought that it's a nailed on certainty that Austin will score against West Ham on February 8th!

If the fee was the reported £4mil to Saints the board should be lined up against a wall and made to listen to Justin Bieber. What the fecketty-feck happened to our £15mil estimate of his value? Even that was low in my opinion.

Good luck to Charlie and all that, I don't wish him any ill will at all but to let him leave for that amount of cash is a smack in the teeth. What on earth are we expected to do with that amount of money? Have our scouts been out to the Vanarama league hunting for the next big deal?

Shocking bit of business, I can only think the club have concerns over his long term fitness or something equally important but this might be giving them a bit too much credit.

Andy Carroll signed for West Ham on loan in a £2m deal in 2012. He then signed for them for £15m which = £17m total. He has made 65 appearances and scored 18 goals.

Charlie Austin signed for us in 2013 for £3.26m (TBC) 82 appearances and scored 45 goals. We sold him on for £4m ( est )

No degree in mathematics required there. But to put it into it's proper context, West Ham signed a player who'd signed for Liverpool for £35m.
    44 appearances and 6 goals for £17m !!!

They have 16 games left in the PL, how many of those will he feature in?
I think they'll be holding on to their million...

Glad to see the back of him, had totally the wrong attitude for QPR. He never moaned, never thought he was too big for the club, never kicked up a fuss and threw his toys out the pram when things went wrong and his summer move never materialised. He just kept his head down, got on with his job, gave everything he had and carried on banging in the goals.

Yep, not the sort thats welcome at our club I'm affraid, you can do one Charlie and take Clint and Ale with you.

Apparently we were paying some/most of Caulker's wage at Southampton, Liverpool offered us a much better deal and Southampton agreed to cut the loan short if.....
You're right about Taarabt throwing away his sell on fee . Have to say I enjoyed the fact that Daniel Levy's 40% amounted to nothing though!

Worth a quick bump, just to mention that when he was being given a squad number, Saints offered him the No 26 shirt. His response? "That's John Terry's number.... so no!"

That's because Charlie is a Chelsea fan, and presumably has a high level of respect for Terry. Honestly.
