This is because we kept it under the radar....Koeman even said he was too expensive. Other clubs weren't alerted and thought CA was staying at QPR till the summer. Even QPR's manager said he thought Charlie was staying...said he had laid plans based on him staying...and then he asked to leave.

Even Austin alluded in his interview that a couple of weeks ago he found out about this. I think it was a done deal before the window opened in reality..pending medical of course :)

He described the fact that we were interested as a "head-turner".

    Good lad.

If QPR's board and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink are to be believed, we didn't express interest until fairly recently, at which point Austin made clear to their management that he wanted the move.

"Well to be honest I didn't know Southampton was an option until a couple of weeks ago and when a club like Southampton comes in for you its a real head turner.

I'll be honest I didn't think I was going to move till the Summer but as soon as Southampton showed interest it was one club I wanted to go to and if we could get it done as quickly as possible then I was ready to go and luckily enough it's today and I'm delighted."

If a politician had made this speech BBC News would have linked the 2 together and made a week's news of the 'gaff'. Clearly (to me) we made contact a couple of weeks ago (or longer because a couple of weeks means not this week but not long ago) and as soon as Charlie heard this he made his mind up (which we already know he had made anyway from that other tweet we saw) so the QPR board at the very least knew 2 weeks (or more) ago and they all knew he wanted to move to Saints or Bournemouth which is why the spin of 'injuries' has been used by other teams when he's told them to 'feck off'

I like this analysis, but the QPR board still may not have told Jimmy Floyd straight away.

A potential return to Bologna for Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez, 25, has hit a snag over the length of contract on offer. (La Gazetta dello Sport)

Comparing Vilhena to Wijnaldum makes me very interested in getting him in.

Clearly, there has been more than football at the heart of Charlie Austin's decision to come to Saints. He wants quality of life too. It allows him to live in the South of England, where his family hail from, and he's come to a preferred club. Saints are the biggest, most ambitious club in this region, outside of London. It's not such a surprise when you think about it. There were two points that made me think the transfer wouldn't happen:

1] I didn't think Southampton were really that keen, having not given any remote indication last summer that they were.
2] For reasons I can no longer clearly remember, I thought Charlie Austin had a bit of a grudge against Saints. That vague lingering thought may have been a supporters rumour rather than anything remotely factual [which tells you one thing about rumours - good or bad, treat them as bullshit].

There were calls last summer to get him in, and pay QPR's £15M asking price. I didn't think he was worth that kind of cash, and quite obviously neither did Saints. The club kept its powder dry. Aren't we glad Les did.

And I can't sign off tonight without laughing at the online Daily Express's headline. Apparently Liverpool have been rocked by Saints rejection of the £8M they have offered us for Shane Long:

    http://www.express.co.uk/sport/foot...Long-Premier-League-Transfers-Gossip-LFC-News

Do football clubs rock at the news that they can't have what they want.? Even allowing the assumption that Liverpool have made a solid enquiry for SL anyway? Clubs would certainly rock at the news that they'd been relegated, or perhaps been pipped at the post for a title, but being turned down by a rival club for the transfer of a support striker.? I think not. Disappointed perhaps. Rocked, no.

Tbh, i find that whole world of Sports News Headline English a bit of a giggle. My two favourites for derision are: 1] for example, when a manager picks out a player who has impressed him, he hails him, like some hero or leader. Simply being impressed isn't good enough, it seems.
The other example is 2] say when a manager looks forward to an upcoming match or the return of an injured player. The manager eyes the match or the returning player. By newspaper headline rules, he's not allowed to simply look forward to the upcoming events, he must eye them. It's ridiculous.
I have been known to almost cough and splutter with laughter if I'm caught in the right mood while reading these silly references. At the very least they never fail to make me smile.

Note to DTLW - keep your newspaper articles free of that kind of crap. Please.! :)

I always like the idea that they 'prepared a bid.' I always think of the board sitting round a table emptying their pockets and looking down the back of the sofa. In our case, we hold Katharina upside down and shake. <laugh>
