I think it must have done Chazz, as that was the way out into the river.

    You are indeed correct.
It was originally called The Dock, then Old dock then eventually Queens dock
    Entrance from the River

Yeah, I remember the ship's bows sticking up in the air at Monument Bridge. But I am surprised nobody has yet mentioned Monument Fisheries, the fishmonger on the corner. You don't see fishmongers like that any more ... or smell them come to think of it. And it surprises me nobody has mentioned funnels and masts and ventilation cowls seen over the fence at Victoria Dock. That was very atmospheric.

Can't say what year it was ... 1958 maybe ... but I went aboard a Royal Navy submarine moored up on the eastern side of Monument Bridge in Princes Dock. Sinister thing.

Can anyone say why it is called Princes Dock and not Prince's Dock?

There did used to be fireboats. I think they were based elsewhere (King George Dock or round there) but of course they will have moved round

The original entrance to The Dock was from the river, but wasn't this access closed at some point after Princes Dock was opened? (I was under the impression that it became a dry dock before Queens Dock closed?)

It's correct name is Prince's Dock. It was opened as Junction Dock in 1829. Changed to Prince's Dock in 1854 in honour of a Royal visit by Prince Albert.

Yeah I think there are pics of this on htgod- so should be searchable , there's also a whole series taken on lowgate with bows reaching out over the dock side , impressive sight.

I remember the fire boat lying just inside the lock at Humber Dock. The fire service had a hut there where the firemen drank tea all day.

Funny one that. I'd have thought it should be Prince's Dock, but Open Street Map has it all as Princes. They tend to be sticklers for correct spelling.

It was definitely originally called Prince's Dock, the same was true of Queen's Dock, both have just been simplified over the years.

i've seen a lot of street names where apostrophes have disappeared. among the worst effects of this are that some of our thicker co-dwellers pronounce princes ave and princes quay as princess ave and princess quay.
