I could be tripping again, but as well as the trawlers didn't there used to be fire - boats as well? Painted red of course, always stood out - hence the old grey matter may be remembering them (or it)
Not strictly about Prinny Dock - more about the (southern) Old Town and Waterfront: http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/pls/portal...ONSERVATION AREAS/OLD TOWN (SOUTH) CACA_0.PDF
I remember the trawlers moored up at the Whitefriargate end of Princes Dock, and the little iron bridge that crossed the Dock at the point. Probably a left over when there were lock gates to Queens Dock there. If there was a more iconic image of Hull then those trawlers moored up then I have yet to see it. I campaigned at the time against the building of Princes Quay which obviously fell on deaf ears. My idea was to preserve the Dock as it was and build cafes, bars and shops around it, not in the middle of it. Albert Dock in Liverpool shows how it could and should have been done. Francis Daly was the man behind the Humber Ferry which was moored up outside his nightclub ( Waterfront) for a while. I think it was the Lincoln Castle, could be wrong. I spoke to him many a time when he was a resident in Hull and he had nothing but hassle from the council over virtually everything he tried to do. I haven't seen him for a number of years so presume he packed his bags and moved out of the city. IMO Princes Quay never developed into the 'shopping experience' that it was pitched as. I was offered a unit on the top deck for £500 a week plus £5k ingoing when it first opened, I looked at the site, and decided against it. The plan was for a 'Hollywood' type Wild West Frontier film set up there with a model railway running through the roof spaces. They did put up a few dummy shop fronts to make it look like Dodge City but is soon turned into nothing more then an indoor market. As with St Stephens in later years, all Prinny Quay did was relocate shops from other parts of the city leaving empty units all over the place. Conclusion; Hull City Council couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

As another thread is talking about Helsinki, Helsinki has a lot of water in the middle of the town. When I was last there they weren't making the most of it but it's certainly better than a run down shopping centre.
****ing thousands. None of the entrance from the river though. You can still see it on Google maps, the entrance is a dry dock now.
