We could be plunged into the depths of depair if the US elects a Repub. The Democrat front runners are equally depressing. Wish the Democrats could get Carl Lewis or Michael Stipe (ex REM) involved or are these guys far too sensible.

Finally found a soul mate here on the island in the sense that we share very similar taste in music .... namely the likes of Grover Washington, Anita Baker, Roy Ayers, Barry White, Massive Attack, Philly, Motown, Stax, AWB, EWF!!! Anyone else on here share a similar taste or are the likes of Grover far too left field.

Close, although a few of them are compilations. He's actually got 18 albums in the Top 100, which is quite remarkable. All in here: http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-chart/

In a recent survey carried out in Great Britain for a leading toiletries firm [Brut] people from Portsmouth have proved to be the most likely to have had sex in the shower!
In the survey 86% of Portsmouth residents said that they have enjoyed sex in the shower the other 14% haven't been to prison yet.

Seems incredible that the doses may have been wrongly calculated. I've read that, back at the beginning of the tests, the doses were very small and gradually built up. Putting the potential error and tragic circumstances aside for a moment, it is significant to note that only a minority were very badly affected, so this appears to be a case of toxicity to particular people, either through bad samples of the test drug, or through an allergic response from those who suffered the awful consequences. Or the doses were wrongly calculated, as you say. Awful.

So much care is taken, but there is always a chance of an adverse reaction in humans, but not in animals. As said, there appeared to be no problems at lower doses...or small problems that were considered unimportant. Not without risk...even without error. Always has to be the first person...in this case, young and healthy.

It is the Go Compare song. Which is actually a recruitment and rallying tune from WWI called Over There [The Yanks Are Coming]

So no suing to ensue. :)

Thinking about it, there have been several instances of test/new drugs having terrible side effects. Thalidomide, was my first recollection.

Thalidomide is still used, but sadly pregnant women was the one group it shouldn't have been used for. I think they actually ignored some warning signs, rather than it being something unexpected (if I remember correctly).

Yes, I believe you're right. In my thoughts I was forming a group of test/new drugs and tragic side effects.

My recollection was that these occur quite often. More than one might first think. Just looked it up and there are indeed several instances in the recent past.

It was never fully tested on pregnant women. It was never meant to be used to alleviate morning sickness, but that, tragically, is what led to thousands of women having deformed babies and still-births. It's only used nowadays as a treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of cancer of plasma cells.

The thing is that someone is always first...impossible to test on pregnant women without giving it to a pregnant woman. That's why it is generally best to avoid drugs wherever possible in pregnancy. However, mustn't think of morning sickness as always mild....it can threaten both the mother and child. Some women have had abortions because their lives were at risk. Another problem is that drugs are rarely tested on children (except when desperate such as for cancer)...just too risky for drug companies....so it comes down to a doctor making a clinical decision to give a low adult dose.

Thalidomide was sold over the counter though, not prescribed, and advertised as being of benefit to pregnant women. That was criminal anyway, even if the consequences hadn't been so appalling.

Thought it was a POM....didn't know it was available over the counter. So long ago now (apart from for the poor victims) that have forgotten details.
