Our problem is that not being manure citeh or Liverpool or not being in London we have to pay top whack to get a lot of players. Not like our recent history of success is attracting anyone. As for Carr did he not recommend Bony ayew gomis Ali remy among others just quickly thought of off the top of my head all not signed as well as signing players rated between good and at least solid as signings such as Elliot cabaye Sissoko Tiote cisse Jaanmat debuchy Mbemba Mbabu Perez ba Anita Colback gouffran. Ok not everyone will agree as to how good or solid a signing some of these are but if we had all of these in our squad I'd suggest we'd be doing pretty well. He can't be blamed if we don't sign his top choices or for the odd mistake. Most clubs buy expensive flops from time to time. We all loved sir Bobby but even he signed a few. Personally I am happy enough with Carr as long as others who know what they are doing like McLaren have input.
My issue with Carr isn't that he is our scout. As you have pointed out there have been plenty of good ones along the way. My issue is the amount of power he holds. Even the best scouts will make mistakes, just as players will fail to adjust to unforeseen factor like the area, feeling settled, team-mates, etc. My issue is that he holds too much sway over decisions. No scout should be more than a scout. Each role within the club is important. Just as the manager cannot have sole responsibility for balancing the books (as they would want the best possible team no matter what), so the scout should not have sole responsibility for signings. The manager should have the final say, rather than having players he may not have confidence in foisted upon him. Scouts are good at spotting talent, but its the manager's responsibility to build a team. Get the relationship and power balance between manager and coach right and you solve a lot of problems.
Not surprised tbh. The average Weekly PL Salary was circa £45k a couple of years back. It may seem high for Gouff, but that's the going rate these days.
Carr is a useless chancer. We should have a group of top scouts not one kingpin. He persued Thauvin for years... And has been proven a bad judge of a player there. I got sucked in by the Carr hype but not anymore. I was wrong.
Fair point although they are supposedly all a team now so hopefully jointly they can make decent decisions albeit Thauvin isn't a good example of that but as we agree all signings arnt going to come off well. My main feelings though were that Carr is coming in for rather OTT criticism and abuse which I don't feel is entirely justified, particularly the abuse. I wonder why some fans always overreact so much. It's counterproductive to the club. Not long since Elliot's recall to the side was being viewed as a complete disaster and all down to the club and Carrs incompetence. I haven't seen too many apologies being typed out and Elliott is just another in a long line at the club. People should consider all the facts first and also realise how destructive to the club it is constantly abusing club players and officials.
I'd be amazed if Carr is our only scout and every job has a line of command with a kingpin at the top. I agree the original hype was ridiculous but the OTT criticism now is equally ridiculous. I suspect his abilities lie somewhere inbetween which makes the bloke human like the rest of us. As for Thauvin it's a mistake and a lesson learned but then if the lad had been signed when Carr first picked him out the price would have been a fraction of what we ended up paying making the mistake less although at a much cheaper price maybe everyone would have been more patient with him and maybe he would have gone on to do really well or at least reasonably well. As for Carrs bad judgement I wish his bad judgment had been backed in signing Bony, Ayew, Ali et al
If this happens we are doomed Mr Mainwaring. The guy is a useless midfielder. ( Colback not much better either, especially as the main man )
You know what, it's bad enough when posters from other boards try to wind you up with poor wummery, but when it's one of your own, well..... Captain Chaos, superWUM.
No not at all CC, l was referring to your prediction that McLaren will start Gouf alongside Colback tomorrow. Good joke that....
