now when I were a lad the winger would run to the byline and IMMEDIATELY cross it BACK to the onrushing centre forward who could see both the ball coming in and the gaping goalmouth, not run to byline do 15 step-overs and then pass 3 metres back to the out of position full back who then hits the first man defending because he now has no-one to cross to because they're now wandering about aimlessly not knowing where to go next
The wish wasn't directed to anyone particular. As for the other comments on crosses I agree that taking the ball to the by line and crossing back so it moves way from the keeper is much more exciting and effective but after a while its too predictable so the early cross from deep then comes into play. Its easier for the forward to divert it into the net against a defender running back but if the defender is already there, it's generally a waste. Answer has surely got to be mix it up. Personally I would like to see a few more running into the area with the ball at their feet. Really difficult to stop a pacy attacker without giving away a penalty
Is he? Good one the other week and against England. The guy is good at headers, just that because he is so tall and our deliveries are so ****e that he ends up controlling on his chest most of the time.
The trouble with that cross from deep is that our renowned for his delivery specialist always makes me say 'Keepers'. And he supposedly stays behind for extra practice!! On corners what drives me mad is when the ball comes to the back post all of our players have run to the front post area and then the next one they all run to the back post and the corner comes into the front post. Are they getting their signals mixed up? Oh and forgot the one where when they split to cover front and back post we hit the corner as far as we can and see if it is a 4 or 6.
All we need to do next is get the other old fashioned saying out of the forwards heads and into the defenders ... "If in doubt, knock it out"
While we are on "back to basics" tactics.... RON, PLEASE LEAVE AT LEAST ONE PLAYER UP ON THE HALF WAY LINE WHEN WE DEFEND CORNERS.... I promise you the opposition will leave two back to mark him.
I would actually quite like to see a very fast player hovering about 5 yards outside our box. This will split the defenders and mean we have a chance of picking up a poor clearance and turning into attack, rather than surrendering possession. If we get a good clearance it opens the field for him to run onto and not be double marked. Often our players in this position get pulled back into the box - Like you say FLT I suppose it's a question of leaving someone for the opposition to mark, rather than using all our players to mark the opposition, wherever that happens to be
Sorry, everyone; weather has provided me a rare opportunity to see a midweek game, and consequently we're going to lose.
