Is not just yet, I'm glad to report. After a ridiculously warm December and Christmas, winter service has resumed with a delightful week of around -25. **** loads of snow, and I got to witness the de-sublimation of the Baltic as it froze, first hand, over the past week. In case you're wondering, it means we'll probably stay up, after a much better Jan-Feb.
Nowt better than a bit of de-sublimation! Just keep an eye out for that re-sublimation mate! Great picture Nordic.
Not quite every day, every other day around the same area..wished I had bothered more, but... Wed Dec 30th and early start of the process: shallow areas starting to freeze up. further round the coast where the last shot was taken it was completely open water - so stupidly, didn't bother with a photo Wed Jan 5th- one week later, you can see the sea starting to freeze where it was open water and 'de-sublimate' - early morning shot and ****ing cold. two more pics to follow!
exciting stuff, aye. anyway. Thu Jan 6th, One day later- whoomph, no-one turned up for beach volleyball practice, soft bastards... 3 days of hard cold and sea frozen to around 1 km out. The clouds in the background - yep, that de-sublimation again! I took the sunset pic that evening, from the furthest point south I could get to. Sun 10th - cold temp drops to a balmy -10 and 2 days of snow, all set for a nice stroll on the sea with junior: if you look v.v. closely you might see some snow-kiters in the background, crazy sods. I'll try and get a close-up this weekend, once I get the skis on.
Awesome pics @Nordic !! I was on a cruise up to Norway and the Arctic Circle few years back. Went to Ny Alesund and Longyearbyen (sp). Simply breathtaking place to be from the Fjords to Glaciers. Might pop some pics on another time if any of you are arsed!! Where is it you're based? Live or work? Keep the pics coming, love owt like that.
It was a bit barren there Com, but these Camels really just go anywhere they like, smelly things as well...This photo is much more representative of this region, really beautiful place.
I have heard in the desert it can get cold at night, but where I live in Abu Dhabi, it gets down to about 12 degrees in the winter, in the summer, it stays in the low 30's during the night...thank god for A/C
A/C is a must. Around 32/33 daytime and 25 night time. This is the so called cooler time. Dont get winter. Only cooler, wetter or ****ing hotter. So a/c is a must.
I Lived and worked In UAE for 18 months, Dubai, after working on a 6 month project there - Burj Khalifa. With the second summer coming up I had to get out. Couldn't face another soulless summer of AC living. I need fresh air and nature, despite having fun wadi/dune bashing and the rest of it. I tried midday golf one summer to avoid the humidity, in a buggy of course, but even a litre of water per hole didn't stop the suffering! So give me cold winters and warm summers, streets I can walk down and go for a pint etc. We're all different like.
You're right Nordic, the summers here are brutal. I actually do play golf 3 times a week out including the summer and last year we were actually out in 51 degree heat....madness. But so long you hydrate and keep in the shade as much as possible it is doable. This time of year is perfect, mid 20's all the time. But I do know what you're saying, I guess the big pull for me out here is the lack of tax..gotta love that right?
where's your pics, fella? hoy 'em up. i live/work here i.e. Helsinki, about 10km west of the city centre, along the coast. About 2 foot of snow since last night... the city keeps working!
