It's well worth a visit. I've done it with Mrs, with friends and on a stag night
Just plan ahead, because there's a fair bit of travelling between spots
You can still see the difference though in some areas

    Germany's great.

The Rhineland is worth a visit. Köln is impressive. If you like a Gothic Cathedral then you won't be disappointed. And they've got the bones of the Magi in a massive gold box too. The zoo and the chocolate museum are entertaining as well.

Bonn's interesting. The German Museum of Contemporary History gives a real insight into how Germany rebuilt after the War and is excellent on the Cold War and The Fall of Communism. Be careful in the Beethoven House mind. I got shouted at by the Fräulein showing us round. She complained that part of Ludwig's gaff had been destroyed by the RAF during the unnecessary and vengeful bombing orchestrated by Air Marshall Harris. I muttered something along the lines of 'you shouldn't have ****ing tried to obliterate my hometown in 40/41 then should you?' The wife silenced me by threatening to maim me with one of Beethoven's ear trumpets. They're everywhere, his ear trumpets. I mean, how many ear trumpets did one deaf German need?

Koblenz is nice too. Deutsches Eck has a **** off big statue of Kaiser Bill overlooking the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine. Impressive.

Berlin's not like other German cities, I really like it, but it has a more underground feel than most German cities, despite reunification, it still feels like it's in a different country.

We drive when we go skiing so we normally take a few days either side and stay in different places along the way. So we've done a bit that borders France, Switzerland and Austria. I've been to Cologne and Düsseldorf with work.

You seem to have very little symphony for the poor bugger Ern.

Apparently, the deafer he got the bigger the ear trumpets became. So he built up quite the collection.

He liked a harpsichord too. The place is full of them as well.

Most of the 'old' buildings have been built since 1945 though haven't they? By the end of the war Bomber Command and the Americans were running out of targets.

I think 90% of Cologne was damaged. Not sure about how badly Bonn was hit. It was obviously in a good enough state to become the temporary capital of West Germany soon after the War though.

Beethoven's house was hit once. By an incendiary device which caused some damage but left the structure relatively intact.

Yes it was because the bombers followed the rivers for navigation purposes. Bombs dropped on important distribution networks primarily the waterways.
