On the back of the Tiger Rag thread I thought I'd post this for discussion as it's something I've been thinking about for some time. Apologies if it's something that has been discussed before.

The reason I have called this an anthem is because I see it as a song from the terraces as opposed to simply a running out song - if you know what I mean. More like Walk On or Blue Moon.
    Well, here it is.

    "Amazing Grace".

One of the common threads of this kind of conversation I've noticed has been the desire to have something that is uniquely Hull. I can't think of anything more Hull than William Wilberforce and this song/hymn is very much associated with him.

I personally think it's a lovely song and would sound great - certainly heaps better than Can't help falling in love!

    Interesting.

For me it has an air of an England rugby game at twickenham about it

Do they sing that, or are you just sayin' like? Because I thought they just sang Sweet Chariot.
Anyway, like I said, to me it has the quality of being Hull.

It is traditionally a rugby song.

I always thought the Impossible Dream would be a good terrace song:

    To dream the impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe
    To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
    To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
    To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To fight for the right without question or cause
To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause
And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest

The club could show some real class by playing a tribute to him on weds! I doubt it would happen but it would be a nice touch.

Yeah nice. Very good! I like that a lot Walter.

And thanks for clearing that up OLM but for me, the fact that rugby people may have sung Amazing Grace from time to time doesn't really detract from it being a good song for us.

I don't think being sung on occasions at rugby is enough to make it a rugby song, but any 'anthem' needs to be grown organically on the terrace, rather than pushed by the club.

Sing it, see if it gets picked up by others. Away games tend to be favourite for things to be picked up on.

Well, I can sing it here in Melbourne but not sure if that'll help!

People near me would prefer it if I was singing in Melbourne.

Why the hell would the club pay tribute to him?

Great musician and I loved his stuff but he has absolutely no link to the club whatsoever, what a daft thing to suggest.

Losing Bowie is like losing a Beatle! I didn't mean lay flowers! I meant play a few of his songs before the game! I put it to you you're a W.anchor!

Playing some Bowie is fine but you said the club should pay some sort of tribute which infers something more specific than playing a few tunes which would be ridiculous. Stop being an over emotional woman.

I said tribute! You decided to interpret how it was to be done! Then jumped all over it! You sum up everything that's wrong with the Internet! Put me on ignore there's a good un.

Calm your knickers down laddo, you're the one trying to downplay your original suggestion as you now realise it was ridiculous.
