Sorry Dave, but we have been in the premier league for 4 out of the last 5 seasons and benefitted from many rises in TV deals.

Look at Palace, Southampton and the Swans to a degree.

I'm not saying be reckless but at some point you have to take the initiative and have some balls.

Napoli rejected an £11M bid from us, how much more should we risk?

It would be interesting to see the relative financial positions of these teams.

Dave, help me because I'm being thick.

What's the difference between a 'so-called fan acting like plastics" and a "plastic fan". I've never met a plastic Norwich fan, so fail to see the difference.

Having just read through the last 3 or four pages on this thread, I fail to understand the rising level of hysteria and panic. Afobe has proved himself to be a good championship striker. He may translate that into the PL, but if he doesn't, Bournemouth have four and a half years to rue that decision. They spent big in the summer, yet they are below us in the table. Spending big isn't everything, just ask QPR. Instead, we brought in 6 experienced PL players who have all settled well and put us on course for survival. Yes, it was disappointing that we didn't sign another CB then, and it will be more than that if we don't again.

In the first 10 days of this window we have signed Jarvis on a permanent deal and Pinto to strengthen our defence. All the indications are that Naismith will have a medical next week and sign soon. Beyond that, we have 3 more weeks of this window to make further acquisitions, so why all the panic? A while ago it was that we only had 1 win in 8 games, but now that we've won 3 of the last 4, there is still unrest. I'll make my judgement on this window when it's over.

So apparently Bournmouth have bid for Grabban and previous reports of a bid were "wide of the mark".

So here's the question do we sell now?
Not the most reliable source of info, to be fair, Bath - but it's all we have to go on. Nothing is ever admitted or denied by the club (and rightly so - there's a lesson for you Steve Evans <laugh>) until it's all sorted. But my oath, wouldn't our forum be a dull place without rumours, goss and speculation <ok>

If accurate, Bournemouth have got their tactics spot on. Unsettle Grabban with rumours of a big bid. Norwich privately deny it to Grabban, but trust is at rock bottom anyway so that conversation further undermines his relationship with the club.

Buy Afobe, then make a derisory bid for Grabban. It looks like they've spent the rest of their transfer budget, so hides what they could really offer for Grabban. Norwich are then in a very weak position to negotiate from, and if we don't sell at a moderate fee, well they can walk away from the table as they've signed Afobe anyway. Leaving us with an even more unhappy player.

Straight from the textbook on Ruthless Negotiations, written by David McNally.

Well the £8m bid came from the mirror. This was from Sky Sports, who I trust slightly further but still not very far.

Wow, DH, that's a devious, scheming theory you have there!
In one way, I like it - but in another, it sucks big time. It's how the wheels of commerce turn, though.
We could do well to think roughly along those lines.
Or at least just a tad more so than we do at present <ok>
I don't want to see my club sign mercenary players. I have never booed my team of the pitch. But I do want to see my club compete in the Premier League and I would love to see some quality players join us. If that makes me a plastic then I'm guilty as charged along with many others on this forum and around East Anglia.

I don't think it's unreasonable that we should expect the club to splash some cash (within our means of course) given that we sold Johnson on deadline day. We're around 1/3 of the way through this window and considering that the club 'want to get our business done early' it's been pretty disappointing thus far. I wouldn't personally question DM but after a disappointing Summer window and what looks like becoming the second one in a row under way I can see why people are restless.

We do have money. Our rivals Bournemouth are making ambitious signings, it's time we did the same. It's the 21st Century, you can't stay in the PL if you're not willing to invest.
I've just come in after an evening out and chose this as the post that most sums up my feelings on the issues so far.
I've maintained from the outset that we may have to borrow some money to attract players who will keep us away from the trapdoor come May 15th and in my book that's 'speculating to accumulate' - especially with the money that's on offer to the PL teams next season.
Good point Dave re Bournemouth and flouting FFP rules.

Sorry a bit late to this party but isn't a plastic someone who would actually start supporting a club because the money has already been spent and success started rolling in? I would think if any of us were acting like plastics we would have been wearing citeh scarfs yesterday!
In my book our recruitment failed in the summer and appears to be at least struggling/failing once again. Like others I can't believe that after the summers lack of net spend and a number of seasons of PL money that we can't afford £10m or more on a good player and I would like to see us buy some players that improve our starting eleven. Whether Afobe was; wanted, would improve that 11 or would have come is now academic, but seeing a direct rival get him while we don't quite get our business done early is frustrating. I don't care if any other recruits cost £12m or 20p as long as they improve the team. A squad player or 3 is not good enough. It would be too much like standing still when many others look very much like they are progressing!
This is not a "me want now or I'll cry" post, it's a "we should have done better in the summer, certainly should have learned from the summers failures and me see deja-vu of failed attempts through poor target selection or lack of comprehension of what it will take to sign the players that we need to improve!"" Sort of post.

Bah!
