Ah, you're back, we were gonna send a search party out... Nothing's changed on the pitch, same old shyte. In fact this sums up QPR supporters perfectly at the moment...
I'm a contemporary of yours Sooperhoop so knew Atomic Rooster back in the days of Devils Answer etc but your post made me go and look at the history of the band on wikipedia - really interesting! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Rooster Mental Illness, Crazy World of Artur Brown, Carl Palmer and Dexy Midnight Runners amongst other things. It was all a bit incestuous (if you're still allowed to use the word) back in those days, everyone seemed to know everyone else and all had bands in common. Not so much rivalry perhaps? Good days anyway, thaks for the reminder!
I think the big difference in those days were many of the bands were playing throughout the year at smaller venues. In London we had several old cinemas that became concert venues under the 'Sundown' logo as well as the Rainbow at Finsbury Park, Chalk Farm Roundhouse and there were so many such venues throughout the country. Usually two or three bands would play varying sets and the music was of the same genre, so many band members interchanged over the years. When I was 18 I actually spent a couple of weeks following a group of bands touring the country under the 'Greasy Truckers' logo, they were all from the Ladbroke Grove area and had all played for years prior to getting record contracts and knew each other so well, it was like a travelling circus and in those 'enlightened' times was the very essence of the 'alternative' lifestyle. I often saw the 'Man' band throughout the 80s and 90s playing at the Half Moon in Herne Hill. These were recorded at the Roundhouse and in the middle of all the mayhem was dear old Lemmy...
Brilliant! I enjoyed those, had some Man albums back in day as well - Live at The Padget Rooms Penarth (!) comes to mind. I wasn't in London in those days so didn't get a chance to see these bands - a big loss, I'm well jel as they'd say these days Greasy Truckers sounds a bit like Rolling Thunder (another of my faves)
One of the great Ladbroke Grove live bands were Stray, sadly, there's no live footage of them but this is the title track from their 2nd album 'Suicide'...
As you like ELP's music you should enjoy Quatermass, a prog band who were around at the same time as ELP but never got the recognition their similar style music deserved...
RIP David Bowie - another icon gone.....not the biggest fan of his later works, but loved his early stuff....
please log in to view this image David Bowie 8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016 RIP! A very sad day for any true music fan. Let's celebrate the many songs and styles of this all time musical genius who's magical music will always stand the test of time and never die! Thanks for the music David, your songs will always be a huge part of my life's soundtrack and bring back many happy memories of times gone by. The QPR forum music thread salutes you.
Ah man....what can I say, other than this news has affected me in the same way that John Lennon's passing did. David Bowie was my first musical love and the soundtrack to my youth. I can remember me and my younger brother sneaking into my older brother's bedroom to listen to Ziggy Stardust and listening to one track with the headphones, then passing them over for him to listen to the next track. I can remember saving up my pocket money to buy John I'm only dancing, even though I never had a record player! Each subsequent single was eagerly bought and then I could afford LPs, so I bought his whole back catalogue! Genius is an overused word when it comes to celebrities, but Bowie is a bonafide one, not one single man has influenced so many other artists over the years, It is admirable that he he never announced his battle with cancer to the media and that he had the strength to complete his final piece of work. This track from my favourite Bowie Album, Low, kind of reflects my mood right now... RIP the Thin White Duke....
