I was there too - no I don't like losing, but I don't like people not getting behind a team who tried hard and very nearly pulled it back. There are too many people who seem to think that we should win every game by lumping the ball forward and expecting something. We didn't play well, but we weren't a disaster and we DO need a goalscorer. We lost to a well managed team who got bodies back behind the ball quickly and took the 2 chances we gifted them. Also a team who are ahead of us in the table - if it had been Man City or Arsenal (remind me of the score in that game will you?) you lot would have been saying "well we tried but they were better than us". As it was "only" Palace it seems we should have won easily. I give up - I won't bother coming on here when we lose. I'll just watch you guys patting each other on the back when we win, as, clearly, you only expect 100% success, an FA Cup, Champions League, etc. How long have you been following Saints?
It's a simplistic view though isnt it. The full backs played much further forward the first half making it at times almost 3-5-2 depending on your point of view. Before kick off I might have agreed it was to defensive but in actual fact we attacked quite well (other than finishing! But we've done that to death I think.) On balance I think I'm starting to question our centre backs. Individually they are good but you cannot survive with the number of mistakes they are making. If we are unconvinced by the academy centre backs then we need to buy at least on more centre back - possibly two. But they need to be better than we have (I'd not Caulker). Yoshida, VVD both make decent back ups.
How is giving up a ball not going out trying? It was ridiculous! First rule in football, never give up and play til the whistle. A thing we did not.
Right, that's it, I have had enough of this team. Another defeat, another year without a trophy, Another ribbing from my mates, Another weekend of not watching highlights on tv, another weekend of feeling down. I am fed up with all these things and am going to support Man Utd, Liverpool or Chelsea. Oh, hang on.
You literally don't understand football if you don't think we set up negatively today. It's as simple as that. How on earth is picking 5 defenders, Romeu, Clasie and Davis in the same line up at home (even worse that it was in the FA cup) not negative? Jesus christ. Do you not understand we played 5-3-2 at the start and ditched it at half time? We could play Palace ten times and struggle to score against them playing 5-3-2.
Start learning to treat people with a little courtesy mate. There is just no need for your manner whatsoever. Disagree with people by all means but do not be down right rude. It is really not good.
I don't think Steve Davis subbing was tactical, he went over on ankle just before half time, Matt Targett was also favouring his right leg about the same time, I was surprised to see him lasting all ninety.
Watching Saints, at the moment, is very frustrating, but I would feel more disappointed if we were never in a game, and were being beaten by more than 1 goal. Individual errors, by our own players, must be top of the assist charts, this season, for our opponents. It seems that every mistake, we make, finds it's way into the back of our net. Yes we need someone who can score goals, but we also, IMO, need a proper captain who will kick players up the backside, when errors are made, even those that don't lead to goals. Palace brought on Jedinak to see the game out, today. Captain of Australia, bit of a hard man, midfielder. Haven't watched him closely enough to know how good he is, but seem to remember he has some of the qualities we lack in a captain. Sometimes our policy of buying young needs to be adjusted to bring in more experienced players, to bring the young ones through.
Look, Dave is one of the nicest, most considered guys on this board and is a gent in real life too. He was also at the game and to be quite honest, probably knows more about football in his sleep than you, so please don't come on giving it the big bollocks like that. It's just completely unnecessary.
If you think 5-3-2 at home in a cup game with 5 defenders , Clasie, Reed and Davis on the park isn't negative you don't understand football either. It's that simple as far as I'm concerned. I didn't call him any names or call him stupid did I.
No but you were down right rude. I didn't like the formation, but was tempted to debate it with you as any formation can be translated in a lot of ways, Davis is primarily used as a link from midfield to attack, but there is no point. You are just right. Fact. End of. All the time.
He is right to be fair. Rude, but right. Where was the guile and creativity in that line up? (Mane aside.) Even when we came up with championship standard players, we beat teams because we had a go at them.
