The Texas open-carry law, which went into effect Jan. 1. made the nation’s most populous state to allow citizens with a permit to carry handguns openly in a holster.

The Americans reap what they sow when it comes to gun laws. More guns = more gun deaths. Obama is the world's worst for trying to change the opinions of the hill billy pro gun lobby.

Who would be better? He's the first President I can remember who actually wants to do something about guns in the US, even if he's having little impact. There was a gun dealer on the news yesterday who said even from his perspective the current regulations, which say you can buy a gun with a driving licence and a verbal assurance that you are not a criminal or mad, are nuts.

It will take another 50 odd years to gradually filter in relevant gun laws in the US.

One way to change the law is to hold a referendum on whether to abolish the 2nd amendment. It will easily pass. It will never happen.

I admire Obama for his stance on gun control (although it's taken him 7 years to do something) but what he is doing will make not one bit of difference.

Reagan was ok because he slept through most of two terms.
Trump looks like he'd have an argument with mute.

Not all of them by any means. Though there are about 300 million guns in the US (one for every person) only about 37% of households have a gun. Which means that a (significant) minority of people find it necessary to have a lot of guns to play with, but most don't. I think the issue for many who have no need to carry a gun is the idea of the state telling them what they can and can't do, which I have some sympathy with in theory, though obviously the practice in this case doesn't do anyone any good.

Imagine the logistics of enforcing a radical change in the law, banning automatic weapons, let alone hand guns, would require a massive amnesty, compensation for legally bought guns, doubtless resistance from the NRA nutters wing. It's soul destroying.

Keep your commie thoughts to yourself. We have enough infighting here on the subject without y'all wading in to the discussion.

I'm pro-gun, but don't own one. When the children were younger, we didn't want one in the house. Now that they are older, we might change our mind.

Historically, let's look at what happens when guns are taken away from the citizens:

Taking the guns away didn't help the crime rate in Australia: http://rense.com/general69/guns.htm

    1. In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves against their ethnic-cleansing government, were arrested and exterminated.

    2. In 1929, the former Soviet Union established gun control as a means of controlling the “more difficult” of their citizens. From 1929 to the death of Stalin, 40 million Soviets met an untimely end at the hand of various governmental agencies as they were arrested and exterminated.

    3. After the rise of the Nazi’s, Germany established their version of gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves against the “Brown Shirts”, were arrested and exterminated. Interestingly, the Brown Shirts were eventually targeted for extermination themselves following their blind acts of allegiance to Hitler. Any American military and police would be wise to grasp the historical significance of the Brown Shirts’ fate.

    4. After Communist China established gun control in 1935, an estimated 50 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves against their fascist leaders, were arrested and exterminated.

    5. Closer to home, Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayans, unable to defend themselves against their ruthless dictatorship, were arrested and exterminated.

    6. Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves from their dictatorial government, were arrested and exterminated.

    7. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million of the “educated” people, unable to defend themselves against their fascist government, were arrested and exterminated.

    8. In 1994, Rwanda disarmed the Tutsi people and being unable to defend themselves from their totalitarian government, nearly one million were summarily executed.

Those are, of course, extreme cases. But what is common is the inability of the victims to defend themselves, when push came to shove. Does the U.S. government really believe that criminals, both American citizens and illegal aliens, as well as terrorists, are suddenly going to perform their civic duty and immediately register their guns?

We'll see if Trump gets in and introduces the new offence of hair mockery.
That's a pretty selective list New York. I won't bore you with the much longer list of countries with no constitutional right for citizens to bear arms where the government has not attacked the populace. Of course, one of the other countries where everybody is allowed to carry a gun is that haven of peace and tranquility, Mexico.

But it's for you lot to decide, is it more likely that your government will attack you than another bunch of kids get killed in a school massacre.

Well done on totally missing the point of gun control in a CIVILISED society. The US is NOT Turkey in the 1910's nor is it Rwanda in 1994. Your whole argument is based on governments turning on it's citizens. If you think for one moment the the Obama administration is looking to control gun ownership in order to attack you, then a) you ought to seriously consider relocating and b) your paranoia is of such a level that you have forgotten the kids that have been slaughtered in your schools. Shame on you.
