Watford v Newcastle F A CUP 3rd Round Saturday 9th January 2016 Vicarage Road 3 p.m please log in to view this image Previous Cup Encounters In previous meetings between the Hornets and the Magpies the first encounter saw Newcastle triumph 1-0 in Hertfordshire in 1924, thanks to a Stan Seymour goal in the 3rd round. Newcastle went on to lift the trophy at Wembley that year, beating Aston Villa 2-0. Then in 1932 a massive crowd of nearly 58,000 - reflecting the importance of the Cup in those bygone days - at St James’ saw United beat Watford 5-0 in the quarter-final with Newcastle’s leading scorer, Jack Allen, notching a hat-trick. Once again - for those who believe in such omens - Newcastle again got their hands on the Cup, controversially beating Arsenal 2-1. Fortunately, the next time Newcastle faced Watford in the FA Cup there would be no glittering prize in store for them. Indeed, many fans will remember the four game marathon of third round replays. Old First Division Newcastle faced Second Division Watford in January 1989. With United sitting 19th out of 20, the first game at St James’ ended in a 0-0; the replay was a 2-2 stalemate; the third game was at Gallowgate and again a 0-0 draw; while the fourth and final clash was decided by a Glenn Roeder own-goal. So, nearly 27 years ago, Newcastle were left to concentrate on their bid for top flight-survival - in which they failed and came bottom on 31 points whilst Watford just missed out on promotion finishing 4th behind Chelsea, Manchester City and Crystal Palace. Will history repeat itself? Newcastle win and go on to lift the cup or lose and be relegated? Match Officials Referee: Roger East Assistants: Simon Long and Marc Perry 4th Offiical: Graham Horwood Roger East will be referee for the match. He usually officiates in the Premier League, having gained promotion to the select group list who referee in the top-flight in 2013. To date, the Wiltshire official has taken charge of 38 Premier League matches. He has already officiated the Hornets twice this season, although this will be his first visit to Vicarage Road this campaign. The Wiltshire official was the man-in-the-middle for Watford's 2-1 win over Newcastle earlier this season in the Premier League and also took charge of the Golden Boys 2-1 defeat to Leicester in November. This season, East has taken charge of 18 games in all competitions and has brandished 56 yellow cards and one red.
Thanks very much Leo. Much appreciated. I believe that the game in 1924 was the first time Watford had an attendance of 20,000+ for a FA Cup tie.
Newcastle would rather lose this and beat us in the league game. Certainly don't want a draw. Has anyone got paper tickets for the game as a friend has despite being told the tickets would just be loaded onto the ST card?
Massive game - we are only 10 points, at the most, from safety so let's give it a go. Can you imagine Deeney running round Wembley with the cup? COYH Thanks for the thread Leo.
Nice one Lenny - 5*'s from me.... I think that we will beat them and go on a bit of a cup-run this season. I have not received any paper-tickets and am assuming the tickets have been loaded onto our ST's...

The head coach will pin the squad on a wall in the changing room at the UCL training ground in London Colney tomorrow after the final session of the week, and Valon Behrami, Adlène Guedioura, Ikechi Anya, Jose Holebas and Sebastian Prödl are almost certain to start the match against Steve McClaren’s men. Heurelho Gomes complained of tiredness after the defeat to Manchester City so Giedrius Arlauskis could get his second competitive start of the season. please log in to view this image Picture by Paul Dawson. @poleydeepics However, a place on the bench appears to be the best Obbi Oulare and and Steven Berghuis can hope for. “Berghuis and Oulare are different,” said the head coach this morning. “They are young, they are part of the Watford project. I’m not in hurry with these players.” please log in to view this image Picture by Paul Dawson. @poleydeepics Berghuis, 24, and Oulare, 19, would not be human if they are not frustrated by the lack of action – Oulare has not played a competitive game since the end of August while Berghuis has not featured since the defeat to Arsenal – but Sanchez Flores clearly wants to use the game against the Magpies to get minutes in the legs of players he is likely to call on much sooner. “I don’t think we will change seven, eight players,” he said. “Maybe four or five players are coming [into the team]. They’ve been training four or five months and know perfectly how they will play. There are other players who deserve to play, who will play. We need to recognise the personality of our team. We need to mix. We will try to push and win the match.” please log in to view this image Picture by Paul Dawson. @poleydeepics There is more than an outside chance of Jose Manuel Jurado starting in his favoured position of No 10, just behind Troy Deeney or Odion Ighalo, “It is possible,” said the head coach. “We never play with a second striker since the beginning, at Everton. We change and move the position of Deeney so he plays in the back of Ighalo but Deeney is normally one of two strikers.”
Doesn't seem to fancy their chances and the one comment (indirectly) rolled out the usual little Watford nonsense.
Thanks Leonardo . So, this will be an interesting one. The FA Cup is so unpredictable, not knowing what teams will be put out but i suspect Newcastle will also save some players for the league so obviously our players just not making the first team starts will be too strong for them and we will win 3-1 i'm back! lol.
great stuff leo, this is a home banker, if there is such a thing ! they are playing manure on tues , a game they need something from, mcclaren has already laid the ground for playing a 2nd string, feel a bit for the fans who travel down today--never nice , but thats why they are fanatics
So sad thinking back. There was a time when the 3rd round of the cup was one of the biggest days of the footballing year. Teams were always the strongest available selections, and the crowds were mostly bigger than for league matches. So privileged to have been amongst those 30,000 + crowds, twice for Liverpool and once for United and to know that their best players would be there.
