Neither, but what we badly need to avoid is putting ourselves in a position where talent level sags and our transfer dealings come with the pressure of possible relegation, because that's where the truly terrible (and financially destabilizing) decisions often originate. Newcastle played the "we'll spend when the debt is paid down" game for some time, nearly got relegated, and then splashed cash in a panic this summer, and early returns aren't terribly good. Swansea's in a precarious spot because the club has, in financial terms, outgrown the owners; they're likely to spend in a bit of a panic because they'll quickly outstrip their ability to cover losses.

That's my fear...that we'll continue our sell-to-buy policy this summer, find ourselves in a hole approaching January with a pile of gaps in the lineup, and be forced into a deeply unpalatable decision between throwing around cash in a blind panic, or potentially getting relegated...or both.

I don't want very expensive foreign gambles, I would be more than happy with good quality players who are proven in the EPL eg Austin, Shelvey etc
However I do appreciate our wage policy will no doubt prevent us from attracking any established players as we are one of the lowest payers and hence we have to gamble on players from Europe who may or may not settle
Shame but that's what we have to live with unfortunately.....and yes the similarity to the dreadful Lowe Regiem is getting more and more realistic

I don't ser why it has to be either throwing ridiculous money around (Pompey, Chelsea, City) or treading water hoping for survival. I think what most fans (including people on here) would like to see steady slow improvement. The next step is to become a club like Everton spurs etc who predictably finish between 8 and 4. The reason people are upset is we looked to have taken a step backwards which is not in agreement with what we've been fed for 5 years. Or what Krueger has been spouting.

I can believe he got lost.
He can't find the goal most Saturday's, so trying to find a room in a big hotel would surely be beyond him. <whistle>

Oh let's just give up then. Because something is hard I refuse to let that stop me doing it.

I thought you'd given up dreaming, or have you found a new one.

Who said stop? How about we try without the whinging?

*tst, starting a sentence with "because" :)

What are we, maybe 10 points away from this conversation being entirely different? I feel that we've left way more than 10 points on the pitch purely out of profligacy in front of goal. We've been poor for long spells but could still easily have won many more games if we'd tucked a few chances away and ridden the wave of confidence that brings. Splashing oodles of cash won't solve that. Shooting practise might.

Do you really not think the club have shown "steady slow improvement" since 2009, or was it all just too good for you? Should we have improved a little more slowly?

The reason people are upset is that they EXPECT continual improvement. I kept saying last season that the first time we didn't have an improved finishing position, fans would moan. Here we are, fans moaning. It is all about fan expectation. Unfortunately, life isn't as simple as a straight line graph and a huge number of fans are short sighted and think only about the now. It's almost like people are demanding success rather than expecting it now.

Your first sentence only offers 2 options. Do you not think we are still trying to improve? Do you really think the club are sat round a table "hoping" for survival? Do you think that just because one season out of the last six that signings haven't been perfect and results haven't gone our way, that the club have given up on strategy and progression, now solely relying on hope?

Sorry Lovelocum, it's not just you, but if you consider the last 200 or so games since 2009, then your post above is laughable. We are showing that progress. The last two seasons we finished top 8. This year we may not, but that is one season.

The first sign of a bump and our fans are moaning at a lack of exactly what the club have given us for the last few years.

I really think our fans need to show some backbone.

I'll get more stick for this post, but i am fed up with people just expecting things to happen and happen right every time. Go speak to Liverpool fans, they used to rule the world.

*awaits moaners moaning that they're not allowed to criticse*

A lot less if you believe the papers as we are about to lose Wanyama and Mane with Pelle off to Fiorentina and now Virgil is off to Liverpool.

Its not all about money. Look at Leicester. You can still get top quality for reasonable money if you look in the right places.

I very much like our stated philosophy of developing youth whilst sniffing out the odd gem for reasonable money. The fact that we've been labelled a selling club (again) is testament to how well both of those facets have been performing in recent years. Simple economics dictate that you can't hold on to a Morgan or a Clyne when a colossal pay-packet is offered by a genuinely big club. It's not our aim to sell players on quickly, we are simply victims of our own success. That said, I do believe that it's possible to add another facet to our squad shape without causing too many problems with morale. If we were (able) to persuade a "top" player at the tail end of their career to come and join us, even if we were talking about £100k per week, what difference would that make to the youngsters? Just imagine if Xavi had come to play at the home of his idol for a couple of years. Would that £12-13m have been worth it just to have the guy's training rub off on the squad? I suspect that it would although I understand the flip side in terms of the green-eyed monster rearing its head in the changing room if the wrong player was recruited. In our current situation, I'm not sure that Remy would fit the bill of "highly remunerated role model" but maybe Hernandez would have.

Absolutely. More than anything its about getting the right chemistry in the team. The trouble is there are a lot of fans that demand instant success. If we're not winning then kick em out and get new people in. Where's the fun in that (unless you support Chelsea or Man City)? I would much rather we stick by and coach the players to success but to do that you have to tolerate occasional slumps. Steady improvement (big picture) has been achieved for five years or more now and analysing the last five weeks (but excluding the one good result against Arsenal) is not really that sensible.

We also need to accept that two or three changes each summer is inevitable. Either they look to bigger clubs and bigger wages or they retire. That is Southampton and we need to learn to accept and live with it. Personally if a player is motivated by more money when they already have more than they could possibly need in a lifetime, then I don't really think I'll miss them. I would rather support a team that hovered around mid table with home grown players than put up with the antics of the likes of Mane, Lovren, and Lallana

Leicester is a good analogy - they are doing exactly what we did last year. Trouble is the result will be the same. They will slide a bit, maybe just qualify for Europe and then lose a couple of star players. But they can enjoy the ride in the meantime.

Sky reporting La Viola after Pelle. Can't see that happening in January.
