Bloody hell, palace looking to spend 27mil, Swansea looking to spend 22mil. It does slightly feel like we are being left behind a bit doesn't it?

Ultimately I just don't think that we will pay those kind of wages. And I sort of still agree with that.

Remy makes sense to me. Available, has pace, and would probably be willing to come - if we pay his wages (we're going to have to if we are going to compete with others).

High wages - also fairly injury prone. Plus I can't see Chelsea letting him go with Falcao being a waste of space and Costa's form being hit and miss. He fits the bill though.

    Agreed. He always seems injured.

Yes I think that's the guy who has links to the club.

Interesting that he reckons Mane was late because the meeting was brought forward and he got lost in the hotel.

Both clubs have less debt than we do.

We need to start spending money. There is no doubt about that. This is exactly what happened under Lowe. We started doing well but when WGS asked for cash we played it too safe. That was a false economy and led to an unstoppable drop from grace. There is a vast amount of money floating about but somehow we can't even spend as much as we sell? Lunacy. A prestige signing might actually persuade others to stay...

Easier said than done. What do you call prestige? A top player who could be considered prestige is likely to be attractive to the big clubs who will pay a lot more than us.

With the money available, we can have most of Europe... But won't

Do you believe that? We can't compete with the biggest on wages and most players that one would consider 'prestige' will want Champions League.... we are in a catch 22.

I don't think "prestige", bank-breaking signings are the answer. I think we need to keep doing what we have been doing.. ~10mil players with room for improvement, and more scouting for young talent from the championship and abroad.
Let's face it - we aren't going down. We need to show the players and fans that we still have ambition and bring in some faces ready for a good crack next season. Someone like the lad that has just signed for Leicester for example.

I believe we are in a rut of our own making. Until we prove we will spend WITHOUT selling first we will be a soft touch for our players and other clubs.

Surely a prestige player will soon be gone just like Mane and Wanyama. Players want money and Champions League. We need players who will bust a gut to play as a team and don't think they are too good for us. We can't compete financially with the top 6 and would have to bankrupt the club to do so. I for one don't see why Katharina should be expected to pour all her money into Saints. Leicester have shown what can be achieved. If they manage Champions League then they have made the first step and may attract some 'prestige' players....who will disappear as soon as they don't qualify the following year.

I partly agree, yet that answers the issue of outgoing, not incoming. We still need to unearth new talent or settle with signing with nearly prestige signings. I don't see them coming and not because of what players leave. It is still a vicious circle.

They do, though we're heading in decidedly different directions on that score than Swansea...their debt jumped substantially last year (from basically nil to over 20m), and they have a large pile of liabilities to work through that we don't (we're owed far more on transfers than we owe, for one).

Mostly, it's just that they are in a position where those liabilities will pale in comparison to what they'll feature if they get relegated, so they're spending.

With Palace, a large share of the club was just sold, and I believe that investment in the squad was part of that agreement.

Agree 100%. This is all about fans who could smell the success around the corner and now want it. I'd like it, but I am happy with the way the club appears to be run. Fans that aren't, are basically saying they want some oil tycoon to come in. Do we get the Chelsea version or the Pompey version?

I agree with this. It would be nice if we find someone, but I think mostly we'll do what you've said above. I'm ok with that.

I tend to agree and I've made the Lowe comparison before as well. I think this summer we brought in too many decent players and (so far) no real gems. Understandable given the extra European games we hoped to have but a squad full of decent players isn't going to get you much success.

Not that it's easy of course. Ramirez and Osvaldo both seemed to be statement/prestige signings and neither turned out too well.
