Just seen this on the Post website.....

Bristol Rovers are locked in a stalemate with Cambridge United in their bid to sign on-loan striker Rory Gaffney. Manager Darrell Clarke last week confirmed that talks over a deal to extend Gaffney’s stay at the Memorial Stadium had been on-going and earlier today revealed that Cambridge had verbally agreed a deal that would have seen Rovers sign the striker on a free transfer once the transfer window opened.

Clarke, however, has since confirmed that Cambridge have now done a U-turn and are likely to demand a fee for a player who has scored five goals in seven games since arriving on loan at the Memorial Stadium.

    Clarke said:
“We are desperate to sign him as he has done well for us, but the goalposts have moved. Rory is desperate to stay and talks are on-going, but it boils down to money. Last week Cambridge were happy for us to take over his contract and I told Rory at the time because the deal was verbally agreed. They have changed their stance since then and they have the right to do that. I don’t want to be harsh on Cambridge because they haven’t done anything wrong but I wouldn’t go about my business in that way. Rory’s head is a bit fried now, but I’ll speak to Shaun (Derry) over the weekend and we’ll see if we can move it forward next week.”

Obviously it depends on the fee but Higgs would be an idiot not to back DC.

    Open your wallet Nick!

We have been crying out for a goal scorer so by my reckoning its a non starter, it was probably the 2 on Monday that moved the goalposts

Not sure if DC was joking but in his interview following Lutons game, he said he has no money to spend!

No, I thought that he said he hasn't spent much money - a veiled hint to Higgs. We charge the highest prices in L2 and gave the 3rd highest attendances so I expect that he'll be given some cash....

He did, but I thing he was wryly alluding to the fact that it's not his money - he has to wait for Higgs to get the chequebook out. It was the post-Orient interview when he said he'd be looking to strengthen and that it would be brainless to sell our better players when he mentioned that he'd spent very little so far.

Basically, he's laying his cards out on the table and telling Higgs to back him. Which Nick bloody well should do!

I remember Higgs saying earlier in the season that depending where we are in the league come January will determine what funds will be available. On that basis Higgs should get in Gaffney. But with a court case looming in 3/4 weeks time, is Higgs keeping funds for that instead (hence DC saying no money)??

Higgs also said that off-field issues wouldn't have any bearing on recruitment....

Hope you are right dude. We have a good size squad with players who can play in a number of positions. But we seriously have a good chance of promotion and if Higgs wants to get this then he has to make sure to support DC, like he did last January with signing Lines who in my opinion made all the difference.

Gaffney got 5 goals in 7 games. Would Harrison or Easter had scored them if they were playing instead of Gaffney. I doubt it. He is making the difference and he has settled in well. We need to sign him and not risk getting someone else who could end up being a flop. Go for what is proven and is working.

If Cambridge have changed their minds about wanting a transfer fee for him what better way of dissuading them that there is no money available. In the Evening post one of the directors stated that they wanted him off the books so they could get Derry the players he wanted to take the club forward

Cambridge are stupid if they don't want an in-form striker, but as long as we stump up some cash their loss is our gain.

Cambridge are right behind the play offs. You would think they would want him to help them get into the top 7 like what he has done with us.

I think Gaffney's efforts have put several extra thousands on the gates for the last two games. He has probably paid for his own transfer fee.

This does not look too promising.

Rory Gaffney's future with Cambridge United remains up in the air following the end of his loan deal with Bristol Rovers.

Gaffney was set to be back on the United training ground today after a spell that saw him grab five goals in seven games with the Pirates, culminating in both goals in their 2-0 win at home to Luton on Saturday.

Rovers boss Darrell Clarke is keen to keep the Irish striker, but claimed in the Bristol Post that United, who lost 4-1 at home to Wimbledon on Saturday, had gone back on a verbal agreement to allow him to leave on a free transfer and were now demanding a fee.

But United chief executive Jez George said nothing had been set in stone with Rovers and he would remain at the Abbey for the time being.

The Us ought to honour the verbal agreement, but perhaps put a clause in for any sell on etc

If Harrison or Easter had got the 2 against Luton there wouldn't be a problem

Gaffney's done well, but he still only looks like a Leaue 2 player. So would DC want him past the end of this season anyway?

Well we are league 2 and he shown us he can score in this league so even if we fail to go up, he is what we need next season. If we go up, he could be the next Lambert, and I only mean this by Walker and Lambert partnership. The season we go promoted fronm League 2 last time, Walker was our top scorer. Following season Lambert scored for fun, not Walker. Gaffney could rip a new one in League. I think he has potential. But lets get into League 1 first. Gaffney could be the difference to get us up there.
