One of my mates studied in Seattle and he used to drive up to Vancouver regularly, stating it was the best City he had ever been to. Personally, Zurich is my favourite City.

Ha, that's got to be the least professional company page ever, judging by his own Twitter page, I'd say Akrill does it himself. His own Twitter feed jumps between raving about how great Hull us, to his support for Man United.
it's just supposed to be inspirational to travellers and persuade them (us) to go to some less well-known spots for a change, which in turn helps local economies and provides some new experiences and not just tourist trap haunts like the obvious ones..
I understand the Seattle - Vancouver thing. If it wasn't for Puget Sound, Seattle would be about as appealing as Cincinnati or Durban. My vote for a best city would go to Hengelo in the Netherlands simply because it was easy to get there from Osnabruck by train at weekends.
But why is it in Rough Guides interests to promote dodgy cities, won't do much for their credibility (and book sales). Unless they're on a back-hander of course...
I lived in Vancouver for ten years and still visit it occasionally as its downtown harbour is only a 30 minute seaplane flight from my home on Salt Spring Island. Its in an amazing location on the ocean with great beaches, huge Stanley Park, and the snow capped mountains behind. But it's home to a massive drug addiction problem and its Skid Row off Hastings is a hell hole. Victoria is far nicer and without the drugs. But Santa Barbara, where I lived for 20 years beats Vancouver all ends up in every respect. Has my vote for the most beautiful city in the world - but probably too small to qualify for this survey.
Santa Barbara is very nice - I'd say it's a fairly sleepy, well-to-do seaside town. Love Robson Street in Vancouver. So many attractive women in that city...
Only had a fleeting visit to Santa Barbara, but that whole stretch of coast up to San Francisco is just beautiful.
Agree Nashville is a sprawling souless place apart from the obvious C/W With areas that are not fit to walk around As much as i agree about CHATTANOOGA and MEMPHIS I have happened upon folk living in cardboard boxes and dead dogs left in the street and all not far from the Aquarium and riverfront glitz in both cities I have been around a bit and i tell you Hull is a lot better than most All have there shart areas
Looking at the picture of the Arctic Corsair moored up in the river and the silt nearly up to the top of the quayside, there's no wonder Hull is susceptible to flooding. Why the **** don't they dredge it like they used to? Too expensive I would suspect. Better to let it flood so that the council doesn't have to pay to clean up the mess. They can leave that to the home owners and businesses.

I thought the Hull floods were caused by the street drains being unable to cope with an extraordinary amount of rain in a short period of time.
The surface inlets / drains were blocked preventing the water entering the system, keeping it at surface level
