Sorry Mulder, but Redmond is improving????? He spends more time watching the game than I do! I thought his performance against Villa was awful!

I did say 'still' ie as in not finished learning and improving. He has good and bad games, but I think in another couple of years he will improve.

I don't see him as a striker, he is far more of an attacking midfielder in my eyes. He will add something to the team that we don't currently have in the final 3rd so will give us a good option. He will also being more competition for places:

As for Bamford, yes he looks like a good prospect but is he a proven PL goal scorer or player? Nah. The sort of player that would be good have around if you not fighting for survival. You never know we may get both.

We need players that know the PL and are willing to fight for their place and the team, Naismith fits the bill for me far more than Bamford. Just my opinion.

Nice to have you back ILD. Hope you are well?

Also, in the play off final Bamford was ****.

I know he had been injured but he didn't show me anything.

I can't see it myself. With the number of strikers we have already, plus Naismith looking likely to sign and add another forward option, surely we'd have to have a major clearout to justify it?

A young player unproven in this league, who won't be match fit, hasn't scored all season and plays in a different fashion to our current options, seems a strange move to me.

The only way I can see it making sense is as a stopgap til the end of the season. If McNally and co can conjure up a miracle of biblical proportions and sell Grabban, Hooper and Lafferty early in the window, we could potentially enter the second half of the season with "just" Jerome, Mbokani and Naismith. Regardless of what league we're in I'd expect a striker to come in in the summer, so Bamford for 5 months could cheaply provide a 4th striker option, without adding another player to shift in the summer.

As I said, I can't see it though.

I like Naismith but £8 million sum seems excessive even if does show some ambition on our part. I don't see Bamford being a good fit for us though.

Naismith yes, Bamford no, even on loan. I'd much rather we pitched for Afobe (assuming we can shift Grabban and Hooper).

I think Naismith would be a good fit for us as an AM who can score as well. Wes scores the odd goal but his strength is in making assists. It'd be good to have another option. Here's an Everton view on it with interesting comments from fans:

Looks like AN wanted Naismith in at the start of the season but it was by Martinez. He is the type of player I'd love to see and shows the board is willing to spend some serious money in the forthcoming window to try and fight for our PL survival. Let's see who else we succeed in signing!!! <applause>

I like Naismith. He players more as a second striker and that has been hugely effective this season. Look at Leicester and Watford!

He makes intelligent runs into the box, can mix it in the midfield battles and has played all across Everton's front line so he's versatile. This is a good signing and the right one at this moment. Not fancy but solid. Not insane money but a big chunk. It feels like the most sensible signing the club has made in a long time, if it comes off.

Inter have accepted our bid for Ranocchia and are trying to persuade to join us. The other deal on the table is a loan to Bologna, but Inter want the cash. Sounds very promising. Jarvis, Ranocchia, Pinto and Naismith shows a serious intent. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus a loan space has now opened up.

Oh I see, I understood the Naismith bit, I just thought you meant Bamford wouldn't improve our options because he couldn't get a game for Palace.

The squad is like a jigsaw and Naismith could be a vital piece IMO. Like jarvis was when he was injury free. Age is irrelevant for me.

The jigsaw analogy is very apt, Thurnby. Some people see a player they like and want us to go for him, but unless he fits into AN's plans that wouldn't be any good. Hooper and Lafferty are good players, but they just don't fit. Naismith is an attacking midfielder who can play as a number 10 or out wide as well as being an effective striker option with a good eye for the goal. He is also a battler for every ball with a strong defensive contributiontion when the ball is lost. We don't need another Wes, we need another option who fits and could step straight into the team, especially for games that don't suit Wes's strengths. Bamford might be another option as number 10, but although he did very well at Boro, he hasn't shown that much in the PL with Palace this year.

Exciting news all round I think. Am I getting ahead of myself being excited by Naismith and Pinto..... the way these are being reported makes them sound like done deals? I don't think Ranocchia will come to us - as mentioned above we have been burned with this sort of transfer before and I am sure he will end up at another Italian club

Not at all. Apart from Brady, the last window was all about 'patching up and making do' and in our (still precarious) position in the league, the board know that that's no longer good enough.
I personally have never found Naismith an 'exciting' player, but it does what it says on the tin and gives 100% every time selected - which is what we need right now.
Rather than guile and flair, we need players who can roll their sleeves up and battle - and to me, that;s his biggest attribute <ok>
I do hope it goes ahead - with no last minute hitches <yikes>

Well in his presser Martinez is trying to poor cold water on it.
I think it's a goer, and he is trying to protect that he will have money in the window.

I agree completely about Naismith, Cromer, but I don't feel that our summer transfers were just about 'patching up and making do'. For me, it was more about Thurnby's 'jigsaw' and filling in the gaps with the right players. Dorrans did well in our promotion push and had the advantage of continuity. We needed another DM and we got a quality one in Mulumbu. Brady, as you say, has proved to be an excellent signing. Wisdom provided another option at RB which was much needed with Martin playing more at CB. Many of us were sceptical about Jarvis coming in at the 11th hour but he has done well and now become our player and rightly so. Along with Brady, however, Mbokani has the potential to be a huge player for us. With 3 goals in 4 starts and 7 sub appearances so far, he could make all the difference in the second half of the season. We were all disappointed by the failure to get a CB in, but I don't think we should let it colour our view of the players we did get in and the PL experience they brought with them.

I don't think I saw anything of him at Palace. All I saw was what's been on MOTD mainly, and I can't remember him being shown too much. I will say that the kid knows where the goal is, and is a natural finisher. The goals are the same size in both leagues. You do get less time to make decisions and react, but that's what playing regular at this level helps you develop. Ask Redmond.

I'm not saying we should go for him. He'd be 3rd choice for me after Afobe and then Gayle, but I also don't think we should rule him out as a back up option. Still think we need a finisher to bring in. Ideally.
