Point taken, but most of those thrashings came in one season, two seasons ago, within a 2 month period. If you look at the season before and the season after we don't have the same level of poor results. That season with its handful of failures skews the look of the stats. Prior to this loss to Southampton you have to go back to that 13/14 season to find the last time we got dominated in the league, which to me suggests we have improved in this regard over the last couple of seasons.
Yep, not a single thrashing last season in the league, only one so far in this season and it was only by more than a 2 goal margin due to goals that shouldn't have been given. I feel like it's been a while since we had a bad day that was really horrendous like the 5-1 against Liverpool or the 6-0 against Chelsea. Personally I feel our team has far more grit and steel than it did in that season with the additions of fighters like Coquelin, Sanchez, Campbell and also are more capable of playing different tactics and being less naive, shown by the upturn in results against the top teams over the last season and a half (wins against City and Utd away spring to mind). This thread would have made perfect sense to me a couple of seasons ago but I feel we have taken obvious steps since then to avoid these kind of results with changes in personnel and also changes in tactics.
Yup, when changed to a 4 goal margin it starts to look less weighted in our favour. But was our loss to Southampton more of a one sided match than us dominating Utd? Also I don't think the loss to Bayern is all that bad, they have an amazing team and they've thrashed Barca for example in recent seasons, they are capable of those kind of results against any team. I feel like this used to be a problem for us but this season and last hasn't been the same issue.
I don't necessarily disagree with this to be fair, I just feel like sometimes our team has this ability to just collapse when we concede in some games. I guess you could say that about a lot of teams though and I'm not saying it happens all the time because if it did, we wouldn't be where we are in the league. It seems like, on occasion, we can hit the panic button too early and we need a more calming presence in that situation to instil the players with the belief that we can get back in the game, especially in matches where we concede the first goal.
I do agree that sometimes we go all out trying to score when we go one down and leave ourselves open to the counter.
We've had more than one bad day and this one's come at a time when we were on the up. I suppose this reflects how unpredictable the Premiership is this season and no one team is outstanding.
Felleini breaks up play wins the aerial challenge and the 50/50 balls, your players can't even win a 70/30 ball. He ain't pretty, but if you don't have someone who puts it about you'll be as successful as you have been since you last had one. He has height and heart, something Arsenal have been missing for a decade.
What I find amusing is people are dismissing Fellani but we've missed someone physical in midfield for some time. For example Vieira wasn't all about skill, he was a physically imposing midfielder that was prepared to play dirty when required.
Coqs reads the game well and intercepts key enemy attacks but he isn't a physically imposing type of player. He is doing well for us but when we've had no one for so long, anyone of decent quality would look amazing. I still believe we need another DM, not only for depth, but to see how good Coqs really is.
TBF I don't think it's just a case of having nobody and then he comes in and looks amazing, the fact is that he has been amazing, the results don't lie, since he has come in we have massively improved, have looked very solid, he has done everything to prove himself and show he is a proper DMF. Since the start of the year (Coq came into the team late December 2014), we have been the best team in the country, and the best defensive team in the country as well, mind you, Coq has made an instant impact with this team, and has done so in the big games as well, City, United (twice), Munich, cup final and it goes on.
I'm sorry, but this is one of the worst posts I've ever read in my life. Just a bunch of cliches and stereotypes.
I'm not disputing that he's been very good and that he's improved our team as a whole. But you ccan't ignore that we've had average DMs for quite some time, so we don't have any real comparison to Coqs. Personally I'm holding fire on Coqs being our saviour speech before we have another good DM in the team to compete in this position and Coqs has had a longer run than 2 half seasons. But if he continues the way he goes for another 2 seasons, then he'll be on the way to being an Arsenal great.
Yet last season (this year) Chelsea won the league, and this season (this year) you have the 4th best defence. Calendar year gets you nothing
Except the post you initially quoted was discussing the calender year. That's what's being discussed, whether or not it is relevant in the end matters not as in the calender year, as A87 stated, we have been the best team in England.
We are the only side in EPL history to get a mini gold version of the premier league title, no other club has been honoured with such a trophy. , so there's your gold trophy.
