Half the City centre is under water, the 2 rivers Ouse and Foss have broke the defences. We live just off the City centre but very close to it and hopefully the incline up Foss bank and then again up Lawrence street will see us ok as long as the fekkin rain stops.. You don't really realise how bad this crap is until it all comes to a standstill in your City and the water is a few minutes walk away. I remember they got it bad here in 2000 but living here now throws a complete different angle on it all..
Was there a couple of weeks ago and it was high then. Kings Arms flooded....... again. A work colleague is there at the moment and says its quite scary.
It is mate, the Ouse might just flip then we will have a right problem here. It's been all planes, helicopters and army today like but it's practically impossible to cross the City from my end (South) to the other side (North) unless it's by boat or one of them big heavy suits that divers use to wear to make them look hard.... Seriously though, it's pretty **** tonight like..
Hiya Joe, Once,around 1968, I played second on the bill with the late Bert Jansch at The Lowther Hotel down on King's Staithe, York. Believe it or not, Bert and I marched along planks propped up on beer crates to avoid the floodwater and get inside the back door and into the gig! But, in spite of everything, I'd live there tomorrow, y'know. It's just a dream. For me, York is truly, truly, the most magical city on Earth. I sometimes stare up at Micklegate Bar or at the Richard Rolle stained glass in North St. church and I just freeze. York, floods or not is just f**king awesome. Hope it stops just short of you mate - but please never forget how lucky you are to live there. You are, y'know.
That place is well flooded today. Looks awful. My mate is currently in the Stone Roses bar up the road and says its a scary sight.
Thanks for that, yep it is a great City and furthermore for me I live about 5 mins walk from the City centre. However my 6 years living down here has been all about looking after those that matter and I have gone months at times not getting out from the 4 walls. Maybe my time is to come down here one day, I surely hope so..
Like Relic said it is beautiful and magical. The architecture, the olde world charm, everything about it. I love raking out pubs away from the usual touristy ones although some of them are pretty bloody good. The Ackhorne is the strangest one yet. Difficult place to find. Quality of buskers down there is normally bloody good as well. Ed Alleyne Johnson, violinist. Knocks out Sabbath, Neil Young, Oldfield, Purple tunes etc and is superb
MrRAwhite, one the funniest things I have ever seen ! brilliant. Being serious they should build a wall about 12 foot high around the river and steams, or around the houses etc. I went to York on a school outing about 1968 and then at a match in 1988, fantastic city.
Cutting back is this Goverments only answer, apart from emergency COBRA meetings, whatever they are, followed by a staged photo opportunity and empty promises. We have had rain before without all this carry on. Dredgeing a few rivers might be a start, and putting in some useful infrastructure instead of cuts cuts cuts, rant over. More importantly, very best wishes Joe, hope you and yours come through it all safe and sound.
I think there's possibly more to come, Joe. I was at Howe Bridge on the Rye yesterday, and it hasn't broken the banks yet. It always does at that point, every year. If it hasn't, all the recent rain from the North York Moors is yet to come. The moors are a problem because peat retains water better than most soils, but it also absorbs it more slowly. Result - a lot of rain on the moors all at once means the majority of ir runs off, down the streams, becks, small rivers to either the Rye or the Derwent, and both of them feed the Ouse. It's not looking good mate. I hope you'll be o.k.
Cannot get the link. Funk is the man for that but it was in the Journal last month and it is in the UKIPdaily pamphlet. The EWFD, European Water Framework Directive. Stopped the cleaning and dredging of all culverts etc. from 2000. Doesn't sound like much but it is yet another cut to save money. Might not have prevented anything due to the amount of rain but. Even if our government whether it be Tory, Labour or whoever couldn't even restart this work if we chose to. It's a European heap of ****e and there's absolutely sweet FA we can do about it. I'm just wondering why if Cameron states they will do everything possible to alleviate the problems why have they not used this as a partial excuse. But strange to me.
Quick post lads, the phone lines are down here so this is a 4g job. It's been the army and helicopters all day trying to fix the Foss water defences, why they would put the control room for them at such a low level is anyone's guess .. We have been warned of another storm hitting late tomorrow with driving winds so at least my farts won't be heard. It's pretty grim in York at the moment and as long as the power stays on, I can cope as we use an air-mattress for Lorraine and her cough assist machine, couple that with all electric cooker so we would be well and truly ****ed.. There's thousands of people down here who's lives have been ripped apart the last 48 hours and it is a very sad situation to see it first hand. It will take this fine City a long time to get over this and we don't really know what might hit with the next storm.. Heads up time and hopefully we are over the worst..
The riv The river Ouse is 5.1 metres above normal at the moment so back to crayon book for you clever lad.. You work it out and maybe give your head a shake at the same time. It's not comedy this, it's reality..

Yes, we are all ok mate, it's just been a rather freaky day but alls good. More worried about floating Lollie down Regent Street naked on an air mattress to be honest but it won't come to that and can I say, the Lancashire Fusiliers have been top-drawer in York the past 2 days, big thumbs up to them lads.. My plan B is QWOP and the new surf board he got for Christmas, if he can get to me in 5 then it was worth the money.. Your concern my man is really appreciated and many thanks..
