I posted on another thread that Stek has had fewer shots on target aimed at him per game than any other keeper. Vin
Looks like Koeman agrees with 87.3% of our board (or Stek is still injured) Gazza will start in goal against Spurs.
In a way, I'm sort of pleased that Stek is still injured - it means Gazza gets another chance. As I've said before, one good game would not have been enough for me to suddenly ditch Stek. I'd have had him straight back in. But due to his injury, that can't now happen, and so Gazza gets a second game. Now if he plays well in this one too, then I will start to become more open to playing him ahead of Stek. But I need proof first that last week was not just a one-off, and also I would like to see first hand the other aspects to his game - kicking, claiming crosses, communicating with defenders. The Palace highlights were great for me to assess his shot stopping (and you couldn't fault that!), but that was pretty much is. (I still maintain that all this stuff about age is irrelevant, as I'd like to think that Fraser is our future).
Gazza looked okay today. I thought he maybe could have done a little better on the second goal but he pretty much had no chance anyway. Wasn't happy with his distribution early on, but it got better. Might as well keep playing him.
I thought he did well - I was slightly concerned 2nd half when the Spurs fans starting booing him, but he was fine really.
I thought he was solid today. No chance on either goal. Those are the type of goals that you don't expect any keeper in the world to keep out. If they happen to make a miraculous save then it's luck and a huge bonus. As a 23 year old keeper that we actually own I really hope Koeman continues to play him..
Loving these highlights of Gazza, knew the lad would come good for you, i still remember when he first came to the UK and put on that Gills shirt at Priestfield, wonderful guy on and off the pitch, i've never had a bad word to say about him.
He shouldn't be dropped after today I agree. Things may have been awkward if the incident at the end had panned out differently? Can you and I agree that we don't need to sign another keeper now then?
I've just watched the goals back. Come on TinTin, I know I'm going to get accused of picking on you, but although Gazza was massively exposed for the second goal, it was softly hit and right next to him. He could have stopped that. It wasn't his fault, it should never have got to that point but to state that you wouldn't expect any keeper in the world to save that is a bit too protective of him. Watching it at the game I couldn't see it, but if Stekkers had let that passed him in that manner her have been crucified. Sturridge second goal against Liverpool was harder hit than that.
The trouble is none of us will ever know why such a soft shot beat him. It may look very simple and saveable to us as onlookers but factually decision making by the goalkeeper comes into play. A nano second can make all the difference and a miss hit goal bound shot can play havoc with the senses. Don't think you can always blame the goalkeeper. Another game another time he would have probably saved it, all goalkeepers will tell you of shots they should have saved but made wrong decisions at the wrong time. Trouble is no one has hind sight!!
Agreed. If it had been Stekkers he'd have been battered though. To be clear, I'm not blaming Gazza for that goal. Cedric needs a rollicking for that and I'm sure Ron will be letting him know!
Nothing against Gazza, but I'm happy that Ron is on my side in this Stek-Gazza talk. Now, if he could please be on my side in this Pelle-Long talk, once Pelle is fit again...
Gazzaniga has proven to be pretty good. Stekelenburg kept a clean sheet last night so keeps his place and is back to number one again.
And if we lose, then it's back to Gazzaniga again... until we lose, and then it's back to Steklenburg? That's crazy.
