New Star Wars is really good. How good and how much you'll enjoy it depends on how much you can switch off the 'critical' side of your brain and focus with the 'entertainment' part of your brain. At least for me anyway.

Yes it is derivative of the original films, and yes it shamelessly recycles plot elements from those so parts are almost carbon copies. However, it has some fantastic new characters, a great script and dialogue, is extremely funny in parts with excellent action and effects (both CGI and real).

The first half of the film is really tremendous, exhilarating, exciting, the characters/actors are obviously pumped to just be in a Star Wars film. Once the older characters are (re-introduced) the film becomes a little muddled and they take some of the momentum out of it and weigh it down.

Essentially it's a pressing of the reset button, a necessary film to allow the next films in the trilogy to truly break new ground. Hopefully the next ones will be more of an expansion of the universe of the films utilising the new characters without their reliance on the old ones to work within the context of the story.

And BB8 is the cutest wickle dwoid this side of the galaxy.

'Escape now, hug later!' ... if that's not already on a fan-made t-shirt for sale on ebay by now then I'm a serving of dehydrated just-add-water bread.

And I don't mind the repitition..JJ said its a "full circle" thing...necessary for a new audience who being children might not connect with the original three (yet) because they are dated in their eyes (they'll learn little younglings) ....

I imagine that the repetition of the story is intentional, a way of connecting old to new and that the story will develop into a new plot, JJ is a clever writer and isn't going to copy a whole trilogy with the same plot.

You guys are guessing here, having not seen the film. It will be interesting discussing it afterwards. It's not the repetition but the manner it's done. Trouble is, I dont want to go on and sound overly negative before ppl have seen it.

    Its fine, honestly.
Not really sure why this is bothering people so much.
Terminator 2 is almost a carbon copy of Terminator 1, yet is one of the most highly regarded sequels of all time.
And they weren't made 38 years apart either.

I think its a safety thing, get the franchise back on track after the godawful prequels, and get it kicking on.....where better to start than right back at the beginning.
I loved it, without doubt the best Star Wars film since 1983. :)

It's not the repetition mate. That's not what I've said. I called it a 're-hash' earlier, for a reason. It's a poor attempt imo. I'm surprised, that having been so critical of the plot holes, poor characterisations and clunking script and storyline in the prequels you didn't see the same in this?

I think the only difference between this film and the prequels is the fact that it's special FX and general cinematography is in keeping with the originals as well as a couple of the original characters. If that is all ppl are looking for, then fair enough and Abrams hasnt had to do much to achieve it. Personally I wanted a story with adventure and adrenalin rush through plot development, like the first three. Apart from a couple of individual scenes, the story chugged along monotonously and with little if any climax. The humour and the new characters, is good tbf but the way they come together I didnt think made sense either and insulted viewers intelligence tbh.

Saw no poor characterisations or clunking in the script. A few minor plot holes, but nothing even bordering Prequel levels of ******ation.
The storyline was "meh" I will grant you, but then its the same story as ANH pretty much, and that story was "meh" on the face of it.
The characters were this films strong suit, the humour was spot on.

<laugh> ok fella we'll agree to disagree. I do think there's double standards on plot holes, script and poor characterisations by those who slated the prequels. That conversation is for when everyone's seen it.

Btw the storylines are the same in all 7 films, but it's plot development which is what each SW lives or dies by.

Indeed, I think we should give them till this weekend, after that, let loose!! <laugh>
I swear the amount of ****ing idiot mates I have who say they are Star Wars fans but were like "Oh I aint gonna go mad! I will just see it whenever".
****ing hipster pricks, there is no shame in seeing it right away. You won't look cool by putting it off ffs.
    "Yeah I aint bovvered doe"
I swear they are doing it just to piss people off who want to talk about it.
Half the reason i watched it right away is because I didn't want to have to tip toe around social media in case some knob jockey gives a spoiler away.

The only thing that would have put me off is if there was a lack of great seats left. But from the amount of screenings available you can get pretty much the best seats in the house. I booked mine Friday night for Sunday afternoon no problem so it was a no brainer. I was buzzing saturday night knowing I'd be waking up to go watch it with the family.

Put on Empire Strikes Back last night as well

I've been watching the old ones in preparation, since the last one I watched was Phantom Menace in the cinema. Just got Jedi to go then I'm ready.
