Sean Dyche: Burnley players will train on Christmas Day before Hull trip

BURNLEY players will be spending Christmas morning and lunchtime with their families before training at Gawthorpe and travelling to Hull in the afternoon.

Sean Dyche’s side face the Tigers at the KC Stadium on Boxing Day.

And while Dyche says it can be tough for players to leave their families halfway through Christmas Day, he is aware it is an important part of the football calendar.

“The only thing that changes is the planning,” the Burnley boss said of the festive period. “We will give the players Christmas morning and Christmas lunch with their families but then we will train later in the day and then travel.

“That is the tough side of it. Most people have all of Christmas Day with their families but we do not. But it is a historic period and a vital part of the calendar. Ian Woan’s dad, who played many years ago, tells us about Christmas Day games in the past. Imagine that.”

The Burnley squad will be left to their own devices for Christmas lunch but Dyche is trusting that they will not overindulge on the turkey or roast potatoes. “It is just reminders now rather than laying down the law,” he said. “For most of the players, their knowledge of diet is very good now.

“It is more a case of ‘Lads, just be careful — you know what you are doing and we trust you to prepare right’.”

The Clarets will travel to Hull having seen their six-game winless streak come an end in style with a 4-0 rout of Charlton Athletic at Turf Moor on Saturday.

“It naturally brings that feelgood factor,” said Dyche of the win. “We have had an up-and-down bumpy run for the last few weeks, although I did not think the performances did that.

“The response to that has been very positive. The performance was excellent on Saturday. Winning brings a feelgood factor to everyone concerned.”

“It is not a relief to me — I have to look at the bigger picture. The fans want to see their team win. The players sometimes get a bit itchy and a bit nervy and it felt a little like that in the first half-hour on Saturday.

“Once we calmed down we got a well-deserved win.”

That's why we'll more than likely lose. They'll be fired up, we'll be more lethargic due to the excesses of the day before - not to mention the very curse that is ****ing Burnley. Boyd and Gray both to get on the score sheet.

I thought it was the norm for teams to train on Christmas Day?

One things for sure, if we don't fight fire with fire, we'll get rolled over and that's something I've yet to see all season! Get the fire engine ready for damage limitation. One good thing, we'll have the majority of possession

Struggle to have any sympathy with someone on 60k a week having to do a half day on Christmas.

Neither us or Burnley have any players on £60k a week, I doubt we've got anyone on half that now.

Nowhere near as bad as the reverse fixture, though Andy may disagree.

Never mind training on Xmas day, they should have been ordered in last Sunday after the Rotherham debacle.

Everyone may as well stay @ home on Boxing Day then. Does anyone give us a chance of even a draw in this game ?

Not looking good at all for us this one. <laugh>

If that's the case then good on SB. Its about time some of our players woke up to the fact that some of their recent and not so recent performances were not fit for them to wear the shirt.

Apparently, they always have to go in on a Sunday when they've lost (Maloney said it's happened at pretty much every club he's been at).
