Sherbet was what was in the middle of these.

At least, that's how I recall it. Language is fairly dynamic and meaning can evolve surprisingly quickly. For example having a few sherbets can leave you kaylied. Both words are holding completely different meanings here.

I love a bit of etymology, me.

Aye, but where does the name "kayli" come from? Seemingly 'Sherbet' is Turkish/Arabic.

Thanks DMD, gave me a few minutes fun.

Kali is the name given to a plant that was used by Venetian glass makers in the glass making process, when it is burn the ashes are dissolved in water and the ash float's to the bottom. The liquid is Sodium carbonate and when evaporated it forms crystals. This can be used as an ingredient of sherbet/kali.

The Hindi goddess Kali destroys ego's and she is strongly linked with cremation. She also got carried away after drinking blood and had to be subdued.

Don't know where the word came from or even how it's spelt but I remember buying bags of it (loose from a big jar) with a stick of liquorice to dip in. The stick was about 5-6 inches long and the top 2-3 inches was flattened so you could scoop the kali out, I think the brand name was 'Orozo' or something like that.

Extract form an article in the Northern Echo 2006,

BACK to the black stuff, if not to the blackclocks. The previous week's column had been chewing on about liquorice - "Spanish" to North-East bairns - thus stirring memories for Mike Heaviside, in Cockfield.
Over that way, he recalls, kids in the 50s could buy rock-like liquorice sticks, about five inches long and with a flattened on which the legend "Orozo hardjuice" was inscribed.

Bugger all to do with Christmas booze though...

We're all going round to Dennis'zz for a bit of Snowballing, and not the dirty kind.

I've not got any booze in yet as I was laid low all weekend, still went to work today like.
I'm hoping there's some exotic fruit Perry's knocking about.
