I personally do it cos I live in London and you get used to it because 'City' means Man City to most people outside of Hull.
Leeds, Coventry, Swansea, Cardiff, Newcastle, Norwich, Stoke, etc. fans must all feel the same as you.
If they have Super League teams called Leeds FC, Coventry FC, Swansea FC, Cardiff FC, Newcastle FC, Norwich FC and Stoke FC, they almost certainly would.
There's a Sydney FC and there's a Sydney Swans, if someone refers to a team as Sydney, which team would people assume they were talking about?
Depends on the context. And no Sydney FC or Swans fan would give a ****. There's also a Sydney Roosters by the way. None of the three sets of fans would give a ****.
You didn't answer the question, if someone said Sydney played well at the weekend, would there be an assumption about which team was being referred to, or would people have to ask which Sydney?
I did answer the question. It depends on the context. If I said to my mate, "Sydney were great on the weeekend, they thrashed the Pies." People would know I mean AFL. And they wouldn't chuck a hissy fit that I wasn't calling them Sydney Swans FC. If they were mildly confused about the sport and asked, I wouldn't chuck a hissy fit that they didn't know who I meant.
Is it, is unfortunately that not everyone can come from Hull, but I'm afraid that's just the way it is.
There are more important things to get upset in life than what people call a club in casual conversation.
