Off Topic British astronaut in space

I've just been watching him doing a press conference from space and you'll never guess who asked the first question. It was Fred Dineage formerly of Yorkshire TV sport and How the kids programme from the 70s! Also he does something on satellite TV about famous British murderers.

 

Tis really cool Tim being up there, and what he's hopefully doing to inspire a new generation who will want to get into space.

I just googled Apollo 1. That's a bit harsh.

 

Just finished that Andy Weir book, The Martian. Really good read. Maybe somebody on here knows enough to say if the science is all bollocks or not.

 

I read it in an afternoon which is rare for me, right up my street. The science in the book is bob on, from the locations on Mars to the orbital calculations to the environment to the dietary requirements. He fact checked with many different astronomers and scientists. I'm watching the film tonight and I suspect it's been Hollywooded to **** but we'll see. The book is very technical, so I'm pleased to learn that someone who's not into planetary science per se has enjoyed it. As a side note, I believe that Andy Weir self published the book and it was made into a blockbuster a year later. There's hope for all those budding authors out there. Ker-ching!

 

Maybe he could drop down for a spot of Christmas dinner with the old man on the bench? A better telescope as a pressie so the he can watch the games in France in the summer.

I'd have loved to have gone into space, ****ing loved it. Sadly I lacked the goody two shoes disposition required to be sent there and any space agency would be too worried about the chance of me robbing the Bank of Mars or TMSBC (the moon and Shanghai banking corporation) to send me there.

Regarding the book, Des Head seems to have covered it. I've not read it but I'm going to. I'm more a quantum information theologian (quantum cryptanalyst to be precise) rather than an astronomer, but the algorithms for solving cosmic problems are very similar and I should be able to prove or disprove the science behind it.
