Considering we've been probably the most successful club in England since Roman came in suggest the manager merry go around has not led to under achieving and in fact quite the opposite. Yes there are other factors but would we have won the C.L in 2012 if AVB remained in charge for instance. A resounding 'no'.

More then one way to skin a cat and I suspect it'll be a long time before United (or any big P.L club) have a manger last more than 3-4 years let alone get anywhere near Fergie and Wenger again.

Hang on a minute, you may be winning the FA and League Cup count but in the trophys that teams actually take seriously we have had more success than you guys since RA has been in charge. 1 CL each, and we lead you 5-3 in league titles. I would look at it like an Olympic medals table, 1 Gold is better than 5 Silvers.

Agree though that sacking managers regularly is part of the game now, and some clubs have had plenty of success by doing so. I think in some ways teams need fresh ideas from time to time, and boards recognise this.

Fergie especially had ridiculous man management skills, and that's why he was able to go against the norm, but I'd hardly call Wengers time a success, he hasn't won a worthwhile trophy for donkeys years. I think Arsenal might have achieved more in that time had they made a change

and my point was that United have won more league titles than Chelsea since Roman took over despite working on much skinnier resources for much of that time. In that sense Chelsea have underachieved.

No it doesn't because we've won only 1 less league title but a europa league and a load of domestic cups as well. Therefore more successful. Thanks for coming though.

And as United are showing, big budgets doesn't always equate to titles, or in fact any real tangible success.

True, then again we had Fergie which no amount of money could buy. RA did try and throw money at him to get his services before he went for Mourinho first time round, but luckily his loyalty was with us.

As is being proven with us now since Fergie has gone, you can throw millions and millions at a team, but it's difficult if the board and the manager haven't got a clue what they are doing:biggrin:

    yup.
If money guaranteed success, then Real Madrid would win La Liga and the CL every year, since they spend like ******s (£165m just for Ronaldo and Bale)

Nonsense. I got more joy out of 5 fa cup/Europa league wins then 1 league win. But then you're not a proper football fan....<laugh>

hmm dont know, you could argue both cases I suppose.
    It's a subjective thing.
If someone finished 10th, 8th, 11th, 1st, 7th, 9th in six races, would you say they are better than a guy who, in the same six races, finished 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd.
Who knows, I dont really care I suppose, but United are the only team that could argue any sort of rivalry on domestic honours since Roman came.

Different times. Chelsea had several years of total financial dominance in the EPL. Nowadays there are a number of clubs with deep pockets. You also have to take into account the fact that LVG is his own biggest opponent.

I guess it all just emphasises just how good Fergie was.

That's because they're mismanaged. As I've said elsewhere, the way Chelsea is run has led to chaos (at times) and underachieving.

Fergie was a rare example of a manager who made himself indispensable to the club.
He controlled everything from first team selection and tactics, to financial matters, he even had a hand in sponsorship deals, youth training.
He , essentially, WAS Man United.

That's hardly spending like ******s, even if they had just got Ronaldo for 165 million it would have been a good piece of business. The guy has averaged more than a goal a game for them, which no player has ever done at any club over a 300+ game period

But we also had to play catch up. Where as United were spending 100s of millions a year after they'd been champions. Our spending did comparatively slow down once we'd got a place at the top table.

But yes, this does all shine Fergie in a better light.

Point is, it is a lot of money without knowing if he'd be that good. On hindsight he's been worth it. Couldn't say the same for say Kaka though who costs what 55 million?
