I think that would be a terrible idea. How does it assist with the regeneration of the city centre and how do people get there if they want a drink?
It does little to regenerate the city centre (though there could be a shuttle bus service), but it could do a lot to regenerate St Andrews Quay, there could be bars and restaurants upstairs. Obviously it's a completely different proposition.
Its run by massive egos with self interest and lack of vision. But they can afford to be like that and carry on taking their easily earned cash because they wont be challenged.
You do realise that councillors earn, frankly **** all, dont you? And everything you say about them can be easily remedied by the people of Hull. Get to know your councillor and, if you dont like them help to ensure they dont get voted back in.
I apologise. I was referring to PT's excuse that he had visited sites displaying images of child abuse only as research for an essay he was writing. (If you're interested, his essay can be googled - it's a load of old ****e that reads like it was cobbled together in haste by his legal team.) I am not inviting you or anyone else to research my arse.
probably a stupid question , but what democratic process allows a single abstention (gone for a piss break / broke a rule on not attending a visit etc etc) to nullify the whole vote !!! What a ridiculous concept , rather than blame the councillor , whoever decided the debate was void should be buried under Myton Bridge
It wasn't a single vote that nullified everything, it was just that without his vote, they didn't have enough votes to get it passed.
Just short of £13k just for turning up at the odd meeting and they don't even have to hold monthly surgeries. Plus expenses which can triple that basic allowance, So in Hull terms £25k a year ? Not bad for a part time job. And they are more difficult to replace is some parts of Hull then others.
For expenses you can only claim back what you spend on travel/phones etc, so it's money you actually get, it's just reimbursement for money you've already spent. You can get additional money (usually £6-10k for being on specific bodies like the education department, fire authority, finance department etc). On average they work 30 hours a week, some of those on the additional bodies work up to 60 hours and they're supposed to be available on the phone at any time. £13k is **** money, Councillors only tend to be clued up in affluent areas where successful people do it because they want to and don't really give a **** what it pays.
On the same day that planning was rejected, the Council announced who was building it. BAM Construction appointed to build 36.2m pound Hull Venue... http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=221,674011&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&p_id=6130
I was originally disapointed with the decision but looking at it 5,000 for that kind of outlay should be the minimum requirement
Its really not very big is it? I'm shocked that Leeds Arena is 13,500, it feels very intimate when you're in there compared with behemoths like Sheffield and MEN.
The 500 jobs it would have created quoted in the HDM are in fact 30 full time and 150 part time. Presumably the 500 figure referred to those involved in building it which are hardly jobs being created, they would be involved in another contract if not this one.
If the venue was built, I'd be intrigued to see what sort of names that they can attract to play on a weekly basis. Hull struggles as it is to attract the big acts as we lose out to Leeds and Sheffield.
Or even smaller acts. Bridlington Spa has 96 events on during the winter. It holds more for both concerts and conferences. Not to mention it is a better looking building in a more attractive location. Any notion this venue would attract thousands of visitors to Hull are somewhat fanciful.
Don't think there's much wrong with that press release, its an update and states the revised application goes back in on Monday which is a quick re-submission. Location and capacity are OK and the exhibition space is just as important as the gig venue, nothing wrong with announcing BAM either. Just hope for some more innovative concept design, hopefully tying in with the new footbridge and regeneration of Earl De Gray, and movement on the various stalled hotel projects.
