Started watching Luther from the beginning - up to Ep 5 S1 now. Thought it looked a bit crap although Idris Elba being in it should have been a hint it might not be. Actually really enjoying it, is really good, glad the new series is almost coming on so I can binge it so far and catch up. One to deffo avoid for @Gerrezinho then !!
Is there a story or is it just a new case each week? I hate that format and that's what is putting me off where there's a new case and very little story and character development, UK TV series are always like that.
It's both and that's what's good about it. There's a new case / psycho / murderer / criminal / sicko each episode ... But there are continuously developed plot-lines as well: • Luther's marriage not working and his relationship with his wife and her partner • Relationship with this sexy murderer/genius who helps him out when he needs it and also antagonises him • Luther's unorthodox working-methods in his dept and the tensions with other Police from that • Luther's own ongoing inner struggle with his demons / intelligence I'm finding some elements of these a little bit repetitive and annoying, like the on/off relationship with the wife. You just think ****ing get on with it and find another woman but that's part of his character and how he thinks. However the different ideas for the crimes and scenarios are pretty original, unique and well done which help you forget about that. So it's well-balanced and you don't have to endure endless/overly-lengthy 'emotional' scenes that are just bore-fest territory. The writing and directorial structure is taught and the acting is (mostly) v good. It walks the line between serious and dark comedy and there are good bits of gore sprinkled here and there.
I'm the opposite. Character development is not a bad thing but too many shows do way too much of it instead of focusing on plot.
Bit of both is best I don't like things that go nowhere for 9 episodes as they are all about character then do it all in one episode. I like shows that mix it up. a good continuing plot line, weekly stories that complete, a few two parts along the way maybe and a longer developing character base. I like criminal minds (when the stories don't reveal the serial killer immediately) for this reason you've a kind of annual story they come back to, character development and usually a big end of season double header. I guess it depends on the show type as well. the wire was not like that and was a full season per story but it was a moving plot you never detected a "filler"
Yeah agree to a point. The type of show I'm on about is House where it was just a different scenario every
Come on la, give it a go. I was the same bit dubious and now I like it boss la. DO IT DO IT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW !!!
Booked my Star Wars tickets with the family last night for New Years eve, VIP seating never had that before. Going to get a big tub of Ben & Jerrys to watch the film and then go to Nandos after it.
Son is a big Star Wars fan and his birthday is the 28th. I'll probably take him then. No Nandos in the US. He'll probably want to go to Cicis or bloody taco bell. Reviews so far are good. Maybe JJ finally made a film that didn't suck.
I have booked mine for monday. ..... I have to say one thing as a major whine. I have struggled along with homeland for months on C4. I wans't going to be i did. there were oh probably 2 months a show i would have said ah **** this and they barely pull it back and i've said **** it see to the end. jesus wept.. i recorded the episode on the weekend and turn on last night... its ****ing ridiculous now. its just so bad, lazy, hacky ****e now. Its trying to be topical yeah? but FFS when a character goes form crying and whining and cracking u pto a complete flip to being the master mind and you start out with the russians i ncontrol and killing lads and all of a sudden this ginger **** runs off to the russians and blows her cover and her handlers to her basically masterminding what can only be called a complete take over.... well **** it its just sad ****.
Great rant, basically you didn't listen to everyone and thought you'd try it and now realise we were all right, terrible show one of the very worst ever.
