There are some exceptions to the rule mate and I'll give you Hart and Butland. I'm too young to remember Shilton and Banks.

Yeah but Shilton started in 66 (Yes I've just looked on Wiki) and it was a total different time. The game has changed a lot over the last 50 or so years

Not foolish statements mate - stone cold facts http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/F...s-huge-debts/story-20352762-detail/story.html

A foolish statement would be to say they got there without spending vast amounts of money because guess what - they did!!

Carson wasn't first choice for a few years after he started and let's face it he's never lived up to his full potential. Don't get me started on Paul Pobinson

If it's in the Star, it must be true! <doh>

Yes, let's ignore our manager and instead believe some failing hack who's reduced to making up stories for one of the worst red tops in the country. <doh>

Any story emanating from the Star, Sun or Mirror should not be allowed to be mentioned in this site. It's just untrue poison. How many times have they got such stories right? Yep, none. <doh>

Carson was 18 when he started against Scum. You don't play in those matches unless you're ready. I do concede that he wasn't a regular with us, but that doesn't mean he wasn't good enough. Not easy to dislodge an excellent keeper like Robinson. I do think his overall career is disappointing for one who had so much promise, but that's another story I guess.

What's your beef with Robinson, btw?

Don't get me wrong I liked Robinson when he first started but he faded on me. I never thought he should have got first choice over Martyn but that's my opinion. I think that when he was 'big' we had a drought of decent keepers in the England ranks. He's failed to impress me in his career.

Collymore comments on Leeds situation under Cellino; argues for strict ownership criteria

The former Aston Villa striker has been speaking about Leeds United and other Championship clubs.

Former player turned pundit Stan Collymore has been commenting on the situation at Leeds United in his column for Boyle Sports.

Leeds are currently 18th in the Championship after struggling for much of the campaign, and while there have been brief upturns in form – especially under current manager Steve Evans – the Elland Road faithful are used to a series of false dawns.

Massimo Cellino remains the club’s owner despite ongoing reports linking others with potential takeovers, but whatever happens in the future, the Italian’s time at the helm will be remembered – at least in part – for the sheer number of managers hired and fired in recent seasons.

Collymore has now had his say regarding big clubs who have fallen from grace in recent times - such as Leeds, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday - and his comments will make for particularly interesting reading for Whites supporters.

“The league needs to have strict ownership criteria and making owning a big club not the preserve of egotistical billionaires who practice economics of boom and bust," Collymore wrote.

“Let’s make the term ‘fit for purpose’ actually mean something. That way they can run properly, spend properly, safe from the Cellinos of this world.”

Collymore also said that the Premier League needed the likes of Leeds and the Sheffield clubs not only to add spice to the top flight but also to maintain what he called “a competitive balance”.

Leeds fans are likely to agree, but it remains to be seen how much longer they will be out of the top tier of English football…and what struggles they must endure before their dreams come true once more
