Title says it all... Is "second season syndrome" a real thing? There is a Wikipedia page on it, with quite the long list of teams... Is there anything behind it, or just a coincidence? Perhaps the team has become complacent after surviving the previous season? Perhaps the rest of the league have "worked them out"? Any thoughts on whether we are likely to suffer the same fate? Any reason to think this also partly inspire the owners decision to change manager? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_season_syndrome
There's something in it, but it's often teams that are only just good enough to survive going down when a better Championship side goes up, like with us over Hull last season. Other clubs do so well in their first season then lose their manager or star players. I don't think we fall into either of these categories, but obviously losing Pearson have been the killer blow. We'll see.
Of course its real because now we have a manager who can't be bothered, is here for the money and can't handle premier league football anymore. please log in to view this image
Well it happens to alot of teams. I think it´s because may be in the 1st season they give it their all & then in the 2nd season they maybe don´t have the right mind set.. maybe ? Plus some of the better players get to big for their boots while getting a fat wage & don´t put the effort in like they did the previous season. I can´t see it happening to LC this season.... well if NP was still there, with CR only time will tell. If we´re near the bottom 3 come xmas he´ll be gone anyway. That´ll please some of you.
I suppose its all about the mentality of it, you don't often hear about teams in their second season taking points off the big 5 or 6 teams. Maybe some players mentally write those games off in their second season, expecting to make up the points against those that came up from the Championship that year. Looking at the wiki, its not as common as you'd expect, i'd expect at least 1 or 2 promoted teams to get relegated the season after with 1 or 2 keeping their heads above water for the second season syndrome. Like us last year, we were lucky to have such a nice run at the end of the season, that often doesn't happen more than once (unless your Sunderland or Villa ) so you haveto make sure that you don't sit still and improve in order to avoid it.
... you might have an element of surprise in your first season ... but the reality is this ... the teams that get relegated are, by definition, the poorest teams over the course of that season, irrespective of how many previous season's they have spent in the league ...
As we've been relegated in our second season twice, I'd say it was definitely more reality than myth. Largely because in the first season a lot of teams run primarily on adrenaline and team spirit and this is often lacking in the second season, particularly if(like us) you spend a load of coin on half a new team.
Not at all it really doesn't matter to me who wins the premier league , your playing well you deserve to be top , I was just simply pointing out that the post said about losing star players it's inevitable that the big boys will come sniffing for vardy and mahrez. Good luck tonight there isn't a better time to play them.
Depends on how well he teams are managed both in terms of training and recruitment. We've been managed excellently since Claudio's arrival and N'Golo Kante is the signing of the season for me. We needed to add to our side rather than reshape it and Kante, Fuchs and Okazaki have all been impressive.
