Well this sounds like one game I made a good decision not to watch.

Fair play to Newcastle. They've got some talented players there, Ashley just needs to give Shteve time to gel it all together which I think is starting to happen.

We were well overdue this result. There have been too many games where we've looked lacklustre yet somehow come away undefeated. The PL isn't usually as kind and today it bit back. Very difficult to form an opinion based on a match thread, but my feeling now is at it has been since the beginning of last season: we sorely lack a respected figure bellowing at the team from the middle of the park. Someone to grab this talented but young group by the lapels and shake some energy and commitment out of them. Lloris simply isn't vocal enough and probably only wears that armband in an attempt to prolong his time at the club.

GK or striker as captain is IMHO never a good thing.
It needs to be back four or MF. Someone who is in the thick of it and can rally
by example or cajole the troops at either end of the pitch.

First of all let me say I'm suffering with a serious case of man flu and might not make the morning.
From the kick off the we seemed to want to take that extra touch and nobody wanted to run at the Newcastle defence, I can only hope that this is part of Poch's cunning plan to convince Levy to spend some cash in the Jan window.
Well done Newcastle you did a job on us

Newcastle were as good as we allowed them to be. We were flat, lifeless, careless, and they took advantage. I hate to think what might have happened had we been playing a really good side!!

We're 2 points ahead of Liverpool and well above Chelsea! <laugh>
I think that sums up what a weird season this has been so far.

Carroll probably deserved a start after a good performance against Monaco, but today he looked lost up against the physical Toon midfield. He contributed next to nothing all game, and Eriksen, Kane, Dier and Lloris were dreadful.

Ugh, how did we mess that up?!

Credit to Newcastle for an exceptional comeback but I'm really disappointed with that second half. The game management was poor again and Lloris should've done a lot better with the second goal. No idea what went wrong with the first, to be honest. Typical Spurs to blow it after a really good first half(arguably first hour).

Wasn't too pleased with the refereeing but it's no excuse, the result is on those players out on the pitch.

Shame because I thought Lamela and Rose were really good today. Hopefully we can pick ourselves up and go on a run with no Europa League for awhile, we need to get back on track with a few wins on the trot.

While plenty online are bringing up how we've won 9 points from a possible 18 following Europa games this season, what gets me is that we conspire to derp against Newcastle one way or another every season. Here's the summary from since Newcastle were promoted back to the Premier League:
2015-16: see the previous half dozen pages of this topic...
2014-15: lost 2-1 at home after going 1-0 up
    2013-14: lost 1-0 thanks to a a Krul worldie
2012-13: one of the many late goals we conceded at that time saw us lose 2-1 away on the opening day of the season
    2011-12: blew a 1-0 and 2-1 lead to draw 2-2 away
2010-11: needed an injury time goal to draw 1-1 away

What makes that summary that little bit more irritating is that Sherwood's the only manager we've had in the last ten years that didn't have one...

Lloris...4/10 should never have been beaten for the winner
    Walker ... 7/10 played well
Rose...6/10 played well first half but was constantly exposed in 2nd half
    Toby...6/10 average
    Vert... 6/10 average
Dier...5/10 apart from goal was very poor
    Ali...5/10 poor
    Eriksen ...5/10 poor
Lamela...7/10 played well but got no support
    Carroll...4/10 bullied in midfield
Kane...3/10 worse game in a spurs shirt ... poor passing, terrible first touch, awful holding the ball up ... should have been bought off on the hour mark

    Subs
    Son...4/10 offered nothing
    Chadli...no on long enough

Manager. ...3/10 ... wrong tactics and subs in second half

What matters is that they have an honest assessment of the match and put it right next time out.
Hard not to be disappointed but if you told me this would be our season back in August I'd have been pleased...5th spot, 3 points off top 4 ain't awful but we need to get back on track

I'm sure they beat us 4-1 after we went 1 up back in 2008 and in 2007 we lost 3-2 after being 2-1 up and that was a last minute winner too...both were at home too.

Even the season they went down with 34 points didn't help us: three of those points came against us at St James'

    It's just bizarre.

Just back from the game, pretty dour journey home really. After the first half we deserved the 1-0 lead but it had been a far from perfect performance and you could almost see the collapse coming. Second half we never got going (quite the opposite in fact, if anythignwe slowed down) and were casually playing like we were 4-0 up not 1-0. They got their tails up and bought on Perez who is a very decent player and Mitrovic too and that made them lively. We got going a bit once they equalised but by then it was too late, outcome was almost inevitable. It was like going back to the old Spurs that we'd left behind recently, we certainly showed our soft, vulnerable side rather than Pochettino's steely team we'd become a bit used to.

Carroll was reasonable on Thursday (although I think he markedly improved after his goal in that game and was off the pace a bit before that) but I can't quite see why he started instead of pushing Alli a bit deeper and allowing Onomah (who was more impressive IMO in the EL) or Son to start. Speaking of Son, he looked reasonable coming on but shanked that shot well high and wide at a key moment and hasn't looked the same player we saw at the start of the season since his injury. Chadli also looked very rusty indeed. I would question why we didn't see Bentaleb or Onomah during the game when we could have done with a bit more solidity once Newcastle got going, and some exuberance up front as nobody seemed to be showing for the ball once the chips were down.

Too often we play too narrow without the fullbacks getting forward enough (Walker is better at this than Rose, who I thought wasn't getting up and down the pitch all that well today by the end) and too many players inside congesting the space - nobody with pace gets down the flanks nearly enough, we had Walker at times down the right today and Rose occasionally, but too often it was Alli trying to run down the left channel, and he just doesn't have the pace for that. Eriksen, Alli and Lamela is not a balanced 3 behind Kane, as all three want to play inside removing space and nobody will hold the width to create some more, so I still think we are searching for the right combination there.

Overall I would say that this was a hugely disappointing game to lose as we utterly failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck and kill it off when we were in a position to do so. Maybe it is better to lose this, and find the answers to these questions now rather than keep drawing games and postpone the loss that would eventually come. I hope the players can learn from this and hopefully we come back with a win next week. I think Poch has some selection and substitutions to answer too really, so definitely hope he finds a solution there. Fair play to the Newcastle away fans as well who were excellent I thought.

  18. All the usual suspects are ripping the piss out of us. Good on them, let them have their fun.

We were poor, today. No doubts about that.

What we've to find out is if Poch and the boys can lift themselves. A lot of our players will know that they played badly, and this is where we (and they) fnd something out about themselves, and as a team. This could be the make or break in our season.

Kane hasn't looked convincing all season, so far. Alli has come on leaps and bounds, and can be forgiven a bad day at the office. Lamela has improved to the point where most of us, now, believe that he wasn't a waste of money.

We're still 5th, where most of us would have been happy to finish this season.

    It's not all bad, lads.

The big loss from the starting lineup was Dembele. The figurehead of frustration is the now the talisman. I actually think starting with Bentaleb, Chadli or Son and we don't lose this game...
Tom Carroll has neither the required attributes nor the physicality to play a significant role for a team with the aspirations of Spurs. Someone of that stature has to be a Modric / Maradona / Messi... ****, a Nayim. Any of the above (Spurs) options would have been a better call to start and that judgement error sits with Poch...
