As I get older I do start to appreciate what talented singers we've had the pleasure to hear , I couldn't with any conviction name any of todays bland , (freudian slip there ) bands or singers Adele excepted

Jeez, when I saw the title thread,I thought we had signed him as the new Manager.
We could do a lot worse,I suppose. Good sing songs at half time.

Getting Laudrup was a coup, but Francis Albert would be a MEGA COUP.
Way to go Huw,you're the man. <laugh>

P.S. Just for the record,I am an unashamed Sinatraphile. <ok>

You're not listening hard enough then. Like all era's there is plenty of talent around. The biggest difference today is the Internet. Whereas in the past Radio 1 was all powerful and we only really got to listen to music that they deemed cool enough to playlist. Nowadays the Internet means that more bands and artistes can heard easily. I no longer listen to any radio station other than Talk Sport because I know that every radio station will play the same commercial dross. Spotify is amazing for finding new music. Search a band you like and it also recommends other acts similar in genre to them. I sometimes come across some amazing music that I know I would never have heard if I stuck to the same old broadcasters. Radio 1/Capitol/Heart/Nation etc all play stuff that we'll probably hear on X Factor at some point. Don't fall for it.

I disagree, though it might be an age thing and music is so subjective, like all art. I actually think good new stuff is very difficult to find. Depends what you like I guess. There doesn't seem to be much innovation going on. It's either bland pop or guitar bands that all sound the same to me. I do like Muse and early Radiohead but even they disappeared up their own arse. I must be one of the few people who think Adele is VERY overrated. Listen to Joni Mitchell if you want to hear class, and she's much more of an intelligent writer imo. When I was growing up in the 70s there was some crap around of course but the amount of quality, diverse music was extraordinary - mainly because in those days record companies gave complete freedom to their artists. Nowadays it's a case of write a hit or you're out and it's all short-termism. Guess I'm just old.

Agree re Adele,so you are not alone. I just can't listen to her without wincing. Amy Whitehouse had the same effect on me.

I have to agree with Boundy and Kiff. Music's had it's heydey, much like movies. It's all been done and genuine innovation and new talent is scarce. I wince when I accidentally turn on the X-factor or any radio station - "zombie pop" was a good description I heard once.

I used to love Jools Holland's show but all the bands sound the same - no melodies, no-one can play lead guitar, just a mish mash sound they all share in common.

p.s. (on topic) not a Sinatra fan, all just IMO of course :emoticon-0105-wink:

My grandfather used to say that.....the oldies are the best.
I just think you've got to look for the good stuff, because TV and Radio won't be playing it.

Well if he was talking about classical, then there's exactly what I mean. History and time will tell. Pop music's not new anymore and innovation is done and dusted.

Every generation wants their own thing and it has to be new, no matter the perceived "quality" though.

TV and radio would be playing (to some extent) anything "better" than what's already there if it existed IMO but obviously there is better stuff they aren't playing. Obviously idiots like Cowell would rather control the media and keep pooping out their own manufactured crap.

It's all subjective at the end of the day, so opinion will always be divided.

Edit: think I contradicted myself there. If you get what I meant then you may need help too <laugh>
