I agree, I for one thought Enrique just wasn't the same, I felt he just seemed to have lost some of his spark and determination once he began insinuating he might not stay.

Jose clearly had a drop in form late last season but I thought towards the end he got it together again. I'd rather keep him for one more season, we're so light at the back already that we really can't afford to lose him yet. Jose playing at 80% is better than someone like Bridge giving 100%. There's no guarantee a good replacement would come in if we sell him.

Why you gotta suck your own balls man Tash? Just be cool.

Anyway, I know it sounds odd but I'd rather keep him and lose out on any transfer fee. Why? Because I think the cash will go straight into Ashley's pocket.

As a person with a lot of love for this club, I can feel happiness or sadness about how much money we receive for a player. However, when I take a step back, I realise that the money we receive is unlikely to make any difference to the club I love. It's a pleasing thought to get more cash, but in the realistic world, is it going to directly improve or damage the club? I don't think it does.

I'd certainly be a lot more passionate about transfer fees if I knew that Ashley took any money and re-invested it in new players, because if we lost a transfer fee, we'd lose out on more quality players. I honestly can't see it working like that with Ashley at the helm though.

When it comes to transfer fees, I think it's more about the principle of it than anything else.

Why is it that as soon as we get a player that looks any good they begin to get associated with other clubs? Tiote being an example, after a matter of weeks there was talk of him moving to a "Bigger" club. It took Enrique some time to find his form, once he did supporters of other clubs suggested he would and should play elsewhere. A player can still be outstanding in a club that is mid table, an ambitious player who wants to play rather than chase the big wages may find it hard to get a game at Man U, Man City, Chelsea.

I think, as others have mentioned, we've got to take a step back and remember that we're football fans and not accountants. Regardless of how much we get for him we aren't gonna find a like for like replacement and it's not like you can stick a bag of money at LB is it? Jose could mean the difference between 8th place and 18th which, as a football fan, is priceless. Stick your money up your arse if we ain't gonna spend it, a brilliant season with the three amigos in full flow is worth more than 10-15 million of anyone's money.

If he doesn't want to be at Newcastle then we should sell him. Im sure it would have been one of Graham Carr's main priorities to find a LB as well as a forward so if there is someone who he feels is as good as Enrique then he should be sold sooner rather than later to allow time for the new player to settle in etc.

There is probably a very good reason for this that im not getting but:

Why dont we sit him down and say

'look jose, you want to play in europe and we understand that, and dont want to hold you back, but why dont you stay with us for one more season and see how we do, a europa league spot isnt a total pipe dream, not hugely likely ill give you but who knows, see how we do, sign a 1 year extension so this time next year we are in the same situation and if you still want to go we will do everything to make it happen'

seems decent enough, its not as if clubs are clamouring for him (at the moment).

True, but in 6 months time when he's freely allowed to talk to other clubs; they will be.

I take your point sir, hence the 1 year extension, which would mean in jan he would cost more and clubs would either wait till he had 1 year left or have to pay more.

But who knows the crazy machinations of football transfers. we will just have to wait and see i guess.

obviously we would have to pay more for a replacement in jan if it did happen so, swings and round-abouts, i just think we could tempt him for another year.

I just see him playing out his contract and seeing how it all pans out in January in terms of interest from other clubs as it's beneficial to him to be on the verge of being a free agent.

If he signs a years contract extension; he can't legally talk to other clubs without Newcastle's permission and he'll find himself 18 months away from a potential exit.

Perhaps in Feb/March, if the interest still isn't there we can offer new terms to keep him.

We need at least a 4th place finish to keep him.

Therefore it is likely he will leave to either arsenal, Barca or Liverpool

I think that people forget the value of money when talking about footballers. We can sell Enrique now for say £8-10 million and find a replacement like M'bengue or we can have Enrique for the season and get nothing for him but still have to find the money for a replacement.
Having Enrique in the team would not mean the difference between 8th place and 18th place, maybe a couple of places but no more.
Towards the end of last season Enrique did not look like the same player, so if he was to perform at that lower level this season he would not be anywhere near as valuable to the team.
So if it was up to me, I would sell him now. Unfortunately as OT has already said, it seems like his potential suiters are going to wait until January to try to get him on the cheap.

    agree

also, how frustrated must Graham Carr be that he's having to bring in gems purely for the reason that the current management is awful and has pissed off our best players to the extent they want to leave?

The money we get for Jose will be peanuts compared to the money we will lose if we don't keep our Premiership status.

Apart from not being able to fill his shoes with a LB as good as he is, the breaking up of the three amigos and the understanding they have with each other will affect the teams performance. As T.F.U. says, we don't need to be relegated to lose money, just the difference in placing's will cost us as much as we're likely to get for him and we'd still need to spend money to strengthen the squad for a replacement. A lose lose situation if he goes.

Exactly, unless we sign Leighton Baines, which we won't.

If we could guarantee a decent replacement would be bought I'd sell him tomorrow, it's very clear he doesnt want to stay here.

I'd try and tempt him with a one year contract extension on this mega bumper wage deal he's apparently been offered (I've heard £60k per week).

I think something has changed though. We were charging in with two big official offers for a new left back (M'Bengue) about a month ago, but now everything is quite quiet. Pards and co obviously don't feel it is as urgent as it was.
