This is a hard one to call and I think this fella would have been snapped up already if he didn't have such serious court issues looming over his head.

He has already shown in the SPL that he is more than capable of holding his own, playing some good football and scoring some great goals.

Since he was linked with Rangers back last summer and again in January a move to his boyhood club looked likely, but with Cardiff entering the race now, he may just opt to try his hand in the Championship.

The way I see it is he can sign for Cardiff, make more money and play in the Championship hoping to make it to the Premier League. Maybe down south his personal life won't come into question as much as it would playing for Rangers.

Then there's the chance to sign for Rangers, his boyhood favourites. He may not make as much money as he would down south but he will be winning honours each year as well as getting European football and perhaps Champions League football.

He would be in the media glare and he would receive some stick from a lot of the fans in Scotland because he's playing for the number 1 team.

Either way it is a big gamble for each club. Either one could pay out £2m for the player and he could end up in jail in a few weeks/months time.

And he can't play in Europe. Not that that's any concern for Cardiff.

I think he would have been cup-tied only if Utd had got through the tie?

    That's what I was thinking.

Jelavic played against Sūduva Marijampolė, Beroe Stara Zagora and Ruch Chorzów for Rapid Vienna in the qualifying stages for the Europa League but if I can remember correctly he only became illegible when he played in the palyoff round against Aston Villa.

I think it was because Rapid got through to the group stage that he was inillegible, in case he had a 'conflict of interest'. Now that there is no way Rangers could get Dundee Utd in any European competition this season Goodwillie would be free to play.

That sounds about right. But will rangers put another bid in for him? I think they should and I'm hoping they do. He can have his chance down south in a few years time.

    I stand corrected!

Given the fact he has the NED gene, he might struggle in Glasgow though.

I'd rather we went for someone without a possible custodial sentence hanging over them.

Rangers guys, I think his upcoming court appearances are why Cardiff appear to have backed off. A £2m fee would be a big gamble for someone who might be spending quite some time "indoors" in the near future.

In addition it looks like Kenny Miller will sign for us today so I can't see us wanting a 3rd striker in a similar mould to Earnshaw and Miller.

Probably not. Although he is younger than Davie Weir.

i dont think either club will attempt to sign him unless he is cleared of all charges tbh.

it appears rangers will be spending most of their budget on cuellar and wallace, so hopefully that leaves us in pole position to sign him up if MM goes for him.

Rupert may be a bit younger than Weir but at least he's proved he can hack it.

Goodwillie isn't the same kind of player as Earnshaw and Miller. Goodwillie is much better technically than both of them. He doesn't just rely on his pace.

I would be worried about signing someone who's main threat is his pace when he is nearly 32.

    Medro Pendes,

Good article, I think his upcoming court appearances make him unlikely to be sold in the near future.

If he gets through them unscathed my opinion would for him to go to Cardiff away from the "friends" up north, a few years to settle down and may be a transfer to his beloved Rangers, problem is will Cardiff still be in the race?

I would be surprised if the Bluebirds or Gers parted with money for Goodwillie until the court cases are finalised.
If and this is a big IF his name is cleared I can see others joining the race to sign him and his value going up.

Any word about that guy Thompson, he would probably be within budget.
