Has anyone heard anyone calling a Spurs fan a "Spud" away from the internet? (e.g. on the radio, on TV, in public). I haven't. The first time I ever saw any Spurs fan being called a "Spud" was on the internet, but never elsewhere. Looks like some pathetic idiot with no social life started it....

Just stumbled across this thread as I came over to see if you had a matchday thread going yet for next weekend. I had always thought that 'Spud' was meant in a harmless way and wasn't intended to carry any negative connotations. I've used the term myself at times and I have always had a soft spot for Spurs going back to when I ended up in the Spurs end at the 81 Cup Final. I also visited WHL to watch you beat Feyenoord 4-2 and had a great night. I think most fans are unaware of any negative aspect to the term and only use it as banter.

Nah, no thread yet. We've got Monaco up first!

Enjoyed your win yesterday though, hopefully you've got your good performance out of the way and will be back to normal next weekend :p

  6. I have only ever seen the term "spud" (in reference to a Spurs fan) used on this website, mainly by Arsenal, Chelsea, and 'Pool supporters.

In real life, in face-to-face discussions, real fans above the age of 12 would be too embarrassed to use the word "spud" to describe a Spurs fan, especially if they were having a discussion with said Spurs fan. One is lead to the inevitable conclusion, therefore, that use of the term is restricted to a certain type of juvenile keyboard warrior, with limited brain-power, and zero wit.

We all know who they are.

Rightly or wrongly, it is used far more extensively than that. I have seen it used on many websites and blogs, and also heard it used on the 606 phone-in.I honestly don't think it is used by most fans to cause offence. Annoyance maybe, but not offence.

  8. Well, no one I know, in the real world away from this site - including fans of many different shades and flavours - has ever even heard the term.

I'd put it on a par as people referring to us as barcodes. It's not particularly insulting, just mildly annoying.
