True LL but even when getting games he still seems unable to play back to back games. I'll be curious to see how he gets on when having to do a medical for his new club. Hope it's not too strenuous
The 3 players back then, known as right half, centre half and left half were collectively also called the midfield players, same as it is today. A centre half played in midfield.
Eire, I thInk that might be because he was overplayed in his debut season, something we also might need to be careful of with Cook. Also agree with your earlier post about it now being about money. Because of the way things have been handled his value is dropping so some prem team can take a punt & even at the smaller teams he'll probably get 20k a week minimum when the new television deal kicks in.
Once upon a time a centre half was the centre of a midfield 3... When formations changed the name stuck as the position dropped into being an extra defender and has since become interchangeable with centre back. Big jack may have cut his teeth as a footballer in the 50's before flat back 4 was the norm, but Don's Leeds played 442 with charlton and then McQueen as stopper centre halves partnering Norman hunter with a full back either side of them as part of a back four. Nobody would call them midfielders they were definitely defenders... and they certainly didn't play the role, we're talking about in this context... Giles and bremner were more than capable of looking after themselves without needing a minder.
Saw us play a Cypriot side? In the uefa cup and big Jack chased one of their players the length of the field to clump him...... After some argy bargy their guy as quite literally running away whilst everyone else just watched laughing...
Sounds about right! There weren't many in that side aversed to hoofing someone! In his early days, jack used to like charging forward I believe... Don't think revie was overly impressed... Though he did get the odd outing as an emergency striker.
He scored a few from corners too. Anyone recall billy and frannie Lee boxing and when both were sent off they thumped each other all the way down the tunnel
The tedium that would follow prevented me from trying to reason this out but a huge thank you for a sensible, factual correction of the usual carp
Marcos, I'm with you, anyone can argue all night how player positions may have been described over the decades but in no way would I describe big Jack as a midfielder.
