I don't like female comedians. They're just too predictable. My favourites are Richard Pryor and Bill Bailey. I loved the whole evil doorbell thing on tinselworm. Eddie Izzard is pretty good too.

Billy Connolly used to be brilliant but hasn't been funny for a decade or so now.
Bill Hicks was more than just a comedian, he was a prophet. A true genius.
Eddie Murphy was a cracking stand up.
Richard Pryor was brilliant.
Chris Rock is very funny.

One thing that needs to be made clear is Ricky Gervais is in no way a stand up comic. He simply stands on the stage reading from a script and generally plays the same ****ing character he plays in everything he has ever done...himself. I'd rather eat my own head than sit through his painful attempts at humour.

As for female comics, the best ever was Dame Edna Everage. I think that tells you all you need to know.

Sorry but I can't stand him. Everytime he opens his mouth I change channels.

Billy Connolly used to be hilarious and I remember spending hours in college drinking and watching Billy Connolly videos. For pure genius though you cannot beat Tommy Cooper, he died when I was only one but I grew up watching footage of him but the man was brilliant and no one even comes close in my opinion.

How the hell is Richy Gervais not a stand up ? Because he reads from a script ? have you actually seen him live ?
Your list of greats use their material several times, worst offender being Billy connolly...

Sounds like you just dont like Gervais, which is fair enough but he is about as scripted as the rest.

Can't believe he hasn't had a mention yet (and I'm maybe a bit biased as I'm a Scot) but Kevin Bridges I think is one of the best new talents I've seen for a while.

I do love the randomness of Ross Noble, I'll watch him any time. He can be an annoying twat sometimes but I do quite like some of Jimmy Carr's material. Frankie Boyle is a legend but he definitely needs new material or a new angle (or just **** off while the going is good).

There are a number of older / dead comedians that others have mentioned that are also right up there which I won't go through, but I have to agree with the sentiments on women stand ups. Why is it that they are NEVER funny though??

Interestingly, I watched the first of a new series (I think it was Monday night on ITV1) where there are about 12 comedians who each do a 5 minute gig each week for a select audience and, in true British prime time TV style, one gets voted off each week and the winner gets a load of **** including a DVD, £100k, etc.

There are a few potentially very funny guys on that. Some of them are appalling though, cringeworthy. But watching them flounder is almost as funny as watching the better ones. It might be a false dawn and it will get boring after a few weeks, but I'm definitely going to watch the next one. The first show was done in front of an ALL women audience which gave the female stand-ups a big advantage and they were definitely better received than if they were in front of a mixed audience.

Next week though is in front of army squaddies (obviously mainly men) so i doubt they're period gags will get them very far that night...

Another very important point and major downside is that the nobber off the OneShow that was showing his cock to women (allegedly women, see the troll thread) presents it.

And I agree that Politics and Animals are both very watchable. He freely admits that stand-up is not his forte, but I don't think there's anything wrong with Gervais. Well, apart from he's a ****, but he's a funny ****.

I would love to beat michael mcintyre to death. Modern comedians i like are chris rock, rhod gilbert and ross noble. I've already mentioned a liking of bill bailey and eddie izzard.
