It's impossible with the contract situation, and pointless to think about as Koeman has shown that he doesn't want him. Reed might get into the first team next season though.
Reed is a poor passer, and somewhat useless on offense right now. To his credit, he generally doesn't get in over his head and plays safe. And he's really, really good at defending. I would like to see Reed play more. Again, I think we tried to build up our squad for Euro and then lost so early and now there is not enough playing time. But I don't think Reed is going to turn our teams' misfortunes around. At this point, he's a lesser Wanyama. But I somewhat disagree with the whole "We're not letting the kids play" thing. I sort of feel like if players from our academy, people don't feel like they count. Romeu and Juanmi came off the bench today... aren't they also also young, promising, hungry players? How about Clasie? Soares? At the same time people are asking for the young players to play more, they are also complaining about us needing a new RB, or attackers in the transfer window. Can't have it both ways. If we sign a first-string player, it bumps back the youth on the depth chart. If we play the youth we have to live with some mistakes and losses. And again, I would argue we ARE playing youth... just not Academy products.
Okay, so Reed is pretty useless to the offense, but he makes an outstanding contribution defensively. How many contributions going fotetad have Wanyama, Ward Prowse or Clasie made?
if I want to argue it, I will. successive managers have failed to puck Ramirez regularly. One has tried to ship him out - clearly there isv reason for that, no?
That's frankly a ridiculous statement. A DM's job is to keep it simple, keep the ball on the deck when possible and complete passes. Reed has a career passing accuracy of 88.4% so far in the PL. Calling him a poor passer is ludicrous. It's just wrong, 80% is considered to be decent. You just cannot call someone with 88.4% passing accuracy at PL level a poor passer! He's actually a sensible passer and plays like a textbook ball winning DM. He looks to play simple passes along the deck to the more creative players. He doesn't play stupid hollywood cross-field, or long balls, that get you no where. There's nothing wrong with that at all and he is a great ball winner. The point is why did we go out and spend millions of pounds on players when we already had a player like Reed (Academy, English, 20 years old)? Also, I consider a young player to be 23 and younger personally.
You answered it yourself. He looks to play simple passes to more creative players. If you put him in then it will be alongside Wanyam and then you have 2 players looking to play it simple to more creative players and thus 1 less creative player on the pitch. He is more a Wanyama type player than a Schneiderlin player because Schneiderlin was very creative and the metronome of the Saints attack. From what I have seen Romeu is a little more creative so Reed's chance would probably be if Wanyama was injured / suspended.
I am with TinTin here, when was he ever given a run of games. Ward Prowse has, but rarely delivers match defining moments. Ramirez will leave and we have missed a huge talent by clueless management ( in this case)
DM's aren't 'creative', nor are they expected to be! Their job is literally to protect the defence and distribute the ball to the attackers/more creative players who are in more advanced positions as quickly as possible. To set the tempo for the team. The good thing about Reed is that even when he keeps it simple he passes the ball early, firmly and crisply. It sets a good tempo for the team and he wins the ball back a lot which means more attacks. I wouldn't call Schneiderlin creative at all. He was a deep lying playmaker that was also a great ball winner. He could hit long passes and short passes accurately from in front of the back four. He had good passing completion. This is certainly not what's considered 'creative'. He hardly ever created an opportunity or got an assist. That's not a criticism, I don't expect that from a DM at all. I expect them to do their actual job. Creative is a term used for a player that creates chances to score and gets assists. Look at Busquets as a DM. Not creative at all. Simple passer. Crisp, early short passes. One assist this season despite the front three Barcelona have. His key passes per game are about the same as Wanyama. Busquet's is a great ball winner. It's not the DM's job to force passes and try to create chances from miles away. It's unrealistic, and rare, for one pass to open up a defence at this level from far away. The players in advanced positions are the ones that must look to unlock the opposition defence. His job is to get the ball to the more creative players, who are in more advanced positions and protect the defence. That's always a DM's job no matter who they play for.
2 DMs doing a purely DM role will not do that well. Wanyama and Schneiderlin complemented each other. Schneiderlin was very creative. He controlled the pace and direction of attack. Wanyama is more a sweeper in front of the centre backs keeping things simple. We'll have to agree to disagree yet again if you think creative means dribbles and assists only. That would imply that the full backs are creative players. This is maybe why we are struggling at present. We either have Wanyama and Romeu where they quite static together but solid or we have Ward Prowse or Davis in there who are much more side to side and box to box players which leaves Wanyama to do the starting attacks role.
destroy what creative spark??? I thought that was the whole point most people are discussing. Our lack of creative spark. All our good spells come down the flanks and cutting in. Nothing coming through the centre and putting HR in alongside Wanyama will not change that. If you are saying he is better at passing forward and quickly and incisive into the front 4 rather than continually to the full backs then put him in. I'm all for HR having a chance, just questioning how he would help us at the moment. He and Wanyama are very similar, breaking up play and playing most balls wide rather than forward. Schneiderlin passed forward a lot. We need one of them type midifelders alongside the one that does the simple stuff.
Haha, I hadn't seen this thread and just put in the match thread how I'd like to see GR play a LOT more right now in that AMC role. Agree with much of what is being said here, though Tintin, sometimes I do wish you wouldn't rely quite so heavily on stats (though in essence I do agree with a lot of your comments here). I do have a very controversial view at the moment which seems to be building some momentum in my mind, but I think I might keep that until we see how this season transpires.
I completely understand the disappearance of Reed from the first team following the signings of Romeu and Clasie. But I completely fail to understand why we would then go and play Davis or JWP next to Victor. Reed should be ahead of both of them in that particular pecking order, in my view. As for Gaston, I just don't understand how he can't get on the bench. We clearly have little to no intention of using Martina, so why waste a space on the bench on him? Particularly when Juami is struggling to set the world alight, effectively limiting us to just one decent/reliable forward option from the bench (ie Long). If not Gaston, then at the very least a forward from the U21s.
Interesting thread and some good comments on the Harry Reed issue. My take is the back four are not getting the level of protection they had last season. Victor et al are under performing in this aspect and I would like to see Reed get a run in the first team. Given that Victor will be off next summer it would be good to first give him some more experience by coming off the bench and thereafter building up his first team exposure. For me, RK seems to be moving away from the academy players; which is sad.
If Rk is moving away from the academy players, he needs to be carefull imho, Or we need to be looking for His replacement, which I think We will be anyway, for the end of his contract.
TinTin, please can you refrain from your aggressive and demanding messages. It really is not necessary. You've been making a good case on this topic but it really doesn't need your issuing demands on what people choose to argue about. Stats tell part of a story. For the record on the topic: I agree that it is baffling why Reed hasn't had more chances. He's been very good when he's played. On Ramirez, he has had chances under three managers, so despite the statistics there is a reason he's not played more. Just before you throw more statistics at me, you may not be aware (depending on how long you've been posting) that there probably hasn't been a greater defender of Ramirez' talent than me. The first time I saw him, I thought he was the real deal. It turns out I've been wrong and he is carried when he's not delivering good stats. I agree it is strange he is not even in the bench right now.
That's not an aggressive post. He used the work **** to describe Ramirez, that's why I was using it. The fact Ramirez has had more end product than Lallana did is a fact, it's just not something that anyone can argue with. More to the point Ramirez isn't ****. If someone thinks he's mediocre then I can respect their opinion, calling him **** is nonsense. As for you saying he has had chances under three managers. Has he? He's played 34 minutes for Saints in the league under Koeman! 10 minutes this season! 34 minutes last season! 2 appearances! He's certainly not been given a chance by Koeman! He was good enough under Adkins and Pochettino to deserve more game time than 2 appearances and 34 minutes in the league since Koeman took over in June 2014! Especially considering our lack of options from the bench and injuries at times!
A truly Independent view of Harrison Reed from this time last year. First pick from every single footballer in Britain. I find Reed's absence surprising, to say the least: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...d-max-verstappen-and-borna-coric-9952316.html Vin
