What if you expect to get top four but don't finish in the top four? Everyone hopes their team wins the title..

I think you are like most of us getting carried away. No one is saying we should be happy to lose or draw matches. Or we should stop trying because we are in 4th or 3rd. That is not how players work.
Teams go fir the title when they are in a position to go for it. Arsenal and City can realistically say they are going for it because they are in position. On the other hand (as an extreme example) we would have a good laugh if mourinho said he was aiming to win the title this season.

If things go well by the start of the new year we could be positioned naturally for a title challenge, if not we aim for top 4

Mweh, far too early for serious expectations but as others have said, while your team goes on a run of good wins and you are still in the mix there is no harm dreaming.
