There are trade offs, but any voice comms of me is the stuff they grab when they record calls en masse, I dont have any concerns about anyone specifically targetting me for surveillance, for obvious reasons.

It can be triangulated, but unlike smart phones, when my phone is off it's off, iPhones can listen to you and be tracked when turned off.

I used to take the battery out of my phone when going to an IT conference. Its scary how hackable they are for the right person.
Can't take the battery out of new phone but I do make sure Wifi, Bluetooth, and NFC are off when I'm at conferences.

    That's a logical fallacy.

You don't get to decide if you are doing something wrong when the government looks at your private information.

You might think that say, planning something atrocious might be a reason to watch us all, but what if you had proof of government crimes and they found out via mass surveillance? do you think they would do othing? Or a journalist had information in the public interest but the spies found out first and prevented it, or political opposition.. which is spied on by the very government they are opposed to.

I would suggest you engage the newest part of your brain evolution gifted you with. <whistle>

Besides it is no one's business what I am dong, least of all foreign government's business ffs

Like I say, I have nothing to hide. I don't have proof of government crimes... And if I did couldn't give much of a ****.

The he fact you get so defensive suggests you have something to hide to be honest....

you ou get one life on earth, couldn't give a **** about anything other than making sure I enjoy it <ok>

You're acting in a way that would suggest you do have something to hide though, otherwise why even be arsed?

I couldn't give a flying one if I was being tracked or my information pawed over, as I've got zero to hide and haven't transgressed any laws of the land. So who's arsed?

If I was that political activist or an investigative journo then my view might be different and my behaviour might be adjusted accordingly. However, I'm not and neither are you ffs <laugh>

    I, shockingly, agree with Lizards.

Complete surveillance means if the authorities want to put you away for disagreeing with you (or because they wrongly think you're guilty of a crime they can't prove) it means they can.

In the old days of yore, totalitarian regimes used to create enough silly unavoidable laws that wern't strongly enforced so that if they wanted to put you away, they could.

Challenge the government... Your honour I bring forwards the evidence that the suspect drank orange juice from a green mug on Wednesday.... Lock him away. Never mention it's really about him challenging the government.

These days they don't have to create ridiculous enforced laws that entrap everyone.

There are enough obscure laws and total surveillance. If we suspect IBWT is not paying taxes he owes we'll just look at his internet history... Aha he illegally downloaded a Justin Bieber album in November... Can't prove he didn't pay taxes but can prove he pirated music.

Everyone breaks the law at some point. Be it speeding in their car, or downloading illegal content.

Think western nations won't do that?

Happens all the time. Organised crime bosses are usually hard to prosecute on their serious crimes but taking them down for income tax infractions is easy.

Surveillance means if the government wants to take you down for a crime but have no proof they'll take you down for something unrelated and just overprosecute you on that instead.

I bet you have, even if you haven't realised it.

Just as an example there's probably some convoluted law on the books somewhere that made looking up RHC's name, address, and other personal details illegal.

Maybe not enforced but I suspect somewhere, somehow there is some law about privacy ironically.

The government thinks you're involved in some fraud they charge you with that instead.

Or incite you with provoking racial hatred from the Islam discussion the other day. (you probably wernt but... They could try building a case for it. Perhaps look at your internet history and cherry pick web sites and news articles that tenuously support their theory).
