Far too expensive. It will be interesting to see how many takers at that price.

Goffs November Foal Sale is well underway in Ireland. You can find the results here.

Next week the mammoth Tattersalls December Sale gets underway in Newmarket with a one day Yearling Sale on Monday 23rd, followed by four days of foals (24th-28th) and finishing off with the four day Breeding Stock Sale (30th Nov-3rd Dec).

There is already much excitement surrounding the one of the anticipated sale toppers - HANKY PANKY a 5yo Galileo mare out of Mariah's Storm making her a half-sister to Giant's Causeway and You'resothrilling - the dam of Gleneagles. Hanky Panky won one race and placed 7 times including a 3rd in the G3 Ballygallon Stakes. She is sold having been covered by Dubawi and is believed to be in foal.

Al Kazeem's stud fee has been set at £12,000 Special Live Foal. In his previous stint he commanded £25,000.

The Special Live Foal basis means that breeders pay the fee on 1st October if the mare is still in foal but that if she fails to produce a live foal (usually defined as living 48 hours after birth) the fee will be refunded.

Due to his sub-fertility issues, Al Kazeem will be carefully managed with (presumably) a strictly limited book. He has 19 foals from his sole crop to date.

Soviet Song has died at the age of 15. She had been suffering from chronic foot problems and as her condition deteriorated it was decided the kindest thing to do was put her down. Soviet Song suffered a torrid time as a broodmare, only producing one runner to date. Her final foal, a yearling filly by Speightstown, is due to enter training with James Fanshawe in the coming weeks.

He's going to stand at John Deer's own stud - Oakgrove - near Chepstow. They've been standing Avonbridge for a few years so are experienced with stallions.

The expected sale topper for the Mares portion of Tattersalls December Sale goes through the ring this evening. Lot 2011 - Hanky Panky - is a Galileo half-sister to the dam of Gleneagles and is offered carrying a colt by Dubawi.

I ought to add that there are other potential big-hitters being sold later today -

Oaks winner QUALIFY sells as Lot 1987
G1 placed LIGHTNING THUNDER sells as Lot 2008
G1 winner TIGGY WIGGY sells as Lot 2019

Lot 1932 is currently in the ring so I'd expect Qualify in the ring at about 4pm.

LUCKY KRISTALE was due through the ring as a broodmare prospect as Lot 1974 but has been withdrawn

Top Lot so far today is Lot 1898, SINNAMARY. A winning daughter of Galileo and half-sister to G1 winner CHIQUITA, she was sold to agent Hugo Lascelles for 700,000gns. Lascelles was acting on behalf of Anthony Oppenheimer who said he was expanding his broodmare band in order to send four or five mares to Golden Horn next year.

New top lot: SETA (1965), sold to disperse the Late Sarah Leigh's bloodstock, goes to Hugo Lascelles for 1,100,000gns. I don't know if he was acting for Anthony Oppenheimer again.

Hugo Lascelles confirmed SETA has been bought for US clients who were looking to get into a good European family.

Lot 1977, G1 winner ICON PROJECT, has just sold for 1,450,000gns to an undisclosed bidder. She is carrying to sire-of-the-moment Dubawi.

2.7 million for a mare in foal that did precious little on the racetrack..........ludicrous

Yup, but she's got the pedigree Stick!

Tiggy Wiggy made 2.1 million sold to Coolmore.

Qualify is also Darley bound after making 1.6 million.

So like Humans now they know the sex before birth? I've always thought they could/should but never heard anyone ever say so.

Despite being by Galileo she has only that one line of Northern Dancer. So there are plenty of options on the matings front with grandsons and great grandsons of Danzig without particularly in-breeding to ND (by today's standards).

I know next to nothing about the breeding scene. From what I gather, owners are now looking to to get some non Northern Dancer blood into their stock. Nothing wrong with fresh genes being injected into the pool, in fact the way things are at the moment, it's a bloody good idea. But how many breeders are actually trying to do it? If I owned a mare of some quality, should I take this route and look for a fresh mix, or stick with the recipe that's proved so successful in the past, and keep close with the multiple crosses of the Norther Dancer line? Are the breeders with less cash in their pockets, more likely to hunt down the new blend because the sires are probably going to be a lot cheaper? I'm not sure I'd like to go to the second and third tier sires with Northern Dancer awash in their blood. Maybe a better performed race horse with the "out" breeding might be the way to go for the boutique breeder. (Provided my mare was deep into Northern Dancer.)

It would be nice to hear your opinion on the matter Princess.

Bustino they've been able to sex the foals in utero for many years - I remember the vet coming round to do the sexing scans when I worked on the stud 15 years ago. Normally they do keep it quiet, but I'm guessing in this instance it was seen as a big plus point so they made it public knowledge. There is a very short window to carry out the sexing scan, it has to occur after the necessary parts have started to form but before the foal is too big to be seen on the scan. From memory they usually do the sexing scan when carrying out the PD (pregnancy diagnosis) scans in October, when a lot of stallion fees are due to be paid. It's not easy though, I remember the vet trying to show me what he was looking for on the screen, and I couldn't see it!
