The Merchant Navy memorial next to the Maritime Museum, has been removed... please log in to view this image ...and is now for sale at a reclamation yard... please log in to view this image The anchor's a grand if you fancy it. Apparently there's some sort of Merchant Navy Memorial going back in it's place, but it seems it won't include the anchor and propeller.
Cock-up apparently, the Council are getting them back... http://m.hulldailymail.co.uk/Hull-s...ffered-scrap/story-28277986-detail/story.html
As the reclamation people checked with the Council before accepting these items and were only asked to return them when the Council started getting loads of angry emails, I think the header is fine as it is.
I'm sure you do think that, I mean, the HDM have a shining record for accuracy in these things. They seem to have forgotten to mention the nice new memorial to the merchant seamen that Chazz points out, which puts lie to the 'vandalism' part. It being contractors seems to make the 'Council' bit at least questionable. I guess they just pander to the anti-Hull agenda some people seem to have. It could equally have been spun as a positive, as the anchor etc have been replaced, and returned, and the second hand yard has had a nice bit of free publicity. ERYC do many piss poor things, but that seems to get ignored or glossed over.
I didn't get that information from the HDM, it's from the reclamation yard. What was it you said you did at the Council?
I didn't mention anything about where I work.I used to work for ERYC if that makes the slightest difference to pointing out an alternative to spin. There's a few stories could come from that, but I don't really see any point, I'm proud to be from this region, and see nothing wrong in offering an alternative view on opinions posted. Only getting info from HDM and the second hand shop possibly explains the lack of the detail on the replacement memorial that puts lie to the 'vandalism' claim. There are many great things going on in this region, this obsession some seem to have in trying to drag things down, but not offering much by way of useful positive input is pretty pointless, and not really what a football forum is for. I know exiles like to be kept up to speed with local goings on, but it doesn't need the incessant, and generally inaccurate negative spin against one group in the region.
Dutch the vandalism is the council removing and discarding the anchor. They employ the contractors so are responsible for them. Yes the new memorial is great but that doesn't excuse the anchor being tossed away.
Weighing anchors? Isn't that what they do. Yep, they're responsible for them. On finding out the contractors have fallen short, they've taken responsibility and dealt with it. The seamen have a new memorial, and no home for some parts of what made up the old one. Re-use is hardly tossing it aside, and the 'vandalism' part is hardly accurate. It's just one more in a line of spin.
