No argiuement from me but with a £60 million debt to KL to pay off, I don't expect a spending spree anytime soon.
We could do with a freshen up a bit in January to kick start our season again that seems to be stalling

Ron's a top boy. Can't argue with any of it really.

We're heading for a massive windfall in the summer. If we maintain the current policy of sell-to-buy, that debt will be gone in very short order...assuming we don't run afoul of trouble in the league.

And beyond that, I'm sorry: I don't expect KL to spend herself into a pauper's grave, but if the plan is for the club to pay back all of the money invested in the training ground, etc, and a sale happens within a couple seasons thereafter, I'm going to be fairly furious with her handling of things. Selling now and reaping a profit is acceptable. Erasing the debt and remaining as owner long-term is equally acceptable. But maximizing the profit of a billionaire is another matter entirely.

I read it that way. A subtle(ish) warning from Koeman of what he wants from saints to stay longer term

Ron has rarely been truly happy after any game...we often start badly and once let a 2-0 lead go (though that was unusual). Like us, he must be frustrated by our inconsistency. Whilst we are doing okay, we aren't as good as previous seasons. We lack the cohesion that we usually have....this may improve as players settle in, but we can't do this every season. We will never be in the market for the top players, but we may have to accept the need to spend on fees and wages if we hope to get and keep the next level of player.
I have been concerned about seeing Ron's frustration with the team. Sadly, my hope that he would wish to extend his contract is getting wobblier.

Absolutely how I read the article.
Back me with some more/better quality players or I don't sign a contract extension.
Most businesses run with the burden of debt but they plan on a long term (10 yr) pay back period so I would hope the plan is to repay KL loan over the long term and not over three years by not utilising the huge growth of the Sky money for the squad improvement or further capital investments.

Always helps to 'see' how the question was phrased and 'how' Ronald said it.

    So here we are.

    From 06:45...

I'd have to agree with you there flt, and think he's pretty much spot on in what he says as well.

Doesn't come across quite so bad listening, but one thing is for sure; that man is a winner and he wants to win and win now!

I think it is obvious from when RK joined us he was going to have a rough ride for a couple of years. With the kind of money coming in at present one would have thought he would have been given more room for manoeuvre on purchases. As for the money that Katrina has put into the club surely she is getting interest at a good rate on it, so a good return on her investment? As long as she has the club one would have thought the money was more than secured. So why the hurry to repay the loan surely it better to increase the value of the club by securing top places in the premier league?
Now that the academy and training ground are sorted if she really does want to go to the next stage, expansion is a must. Doing things on the cheap is never going to achieve this. Her father knew this so assumedly will she too.
What about these so called Yankee investors in the club where did they come from?
Saints can achieve what they purport their goals to be without going into any serious debt....So come on Saints back your manager's judgement or be prepared to lose him at the end of his contract!!

The book value of the club far exceeds the investment Katerina has made so if she wanted to recoup her investment all she needs to is sell the club. The fact that she hasn't is surely evidence that the driver is not purely financial.

The club is now run on a sound financial footing and will only spend within its own limits. Ron knows and understands that and wants to be part of the progress providing we see continuous improvement. If everything goes to plan then he will have more money to spend but that means he has to deliver a trophy and / or European football. Hence the comment 'I want to change that'.

In conclusion, I think everyone at the club is on the same page and I see nothing to get worked up about from the quotes.

Rodgers said that the long term intention was to reduce the debt to Katharina...he said it wasn't good for a business to be exposed to so much debt. I don't think it will affect our purchases much if the money is repaid over a long period. A few million a year will hardly affect us....and as we all know, repaying the capital reduces interest payments in the longer term.

I have a mortgage; quite a large one, but neither me nor the bank worry to much about that as long as there is still the appropriate level of income. The club isn't really much different.

I worked like that until I could see retirement on the horizon...then I started paying off lump sums and overpaying to clear it. In the long term must have saved a lot of interest. The difference between a mortgage and what the club is experiencing is that the mortgage company won't suddenly sell your house if they fancy the money early.

Agreed, however in terms of a manageable debt, it is similar.

Ps. I was paying over the monthly payments to get the capital down, but then we moved 4 years ago and boo... no over paying now :(

I very much suspected that it wasn't as clear as the media reported it. Sure, Ron would like to spend money. Everybody would the opportunity to spend money, but he knows things have to be done in order. I also got the impression though that he was still suffering from being disappointed with the team's performance from Saturday. In context, I don't the spend money remark comes across as anything bad at all.
