Don't really agree with that. He broke the record this year so it should be celebrated and acknowledged this year.

A bit harder harder to do it in the proper world cup though. Witness the success of the USA at women's football compared to men's.

For what it's worth, I agree that Root is the most deserving absentee from the list. He's scored more runs for England this year than anyone ever has in one year.

Sadly for the Women's football team The GB Davis Cup team will now win this award. As for Leeds Rhinos they fall into the Kevin Sinfield criteria.

Can't disagree with that, even though I am not a particularly bigRL fan. RL not trendy enough to get the votes of southern BBC viewers though.

they've manipulated the shortlist - used to be able to vote for who you wanted a few years back- now they tell you who to vote for having made sure there's a 'decent' spread of men, women, and ethnic minorities

.......and minority sports which just happen to be covered by the BBC because they are cheap, ie; eggchasing. If the BBC still covered Test Cricket then Joe Root would have been a contestant and so would Jimmy Anderson.

If Gary is shocked then surely a full investigation of the BBC and the panel who pick the shortlist is needed ?

In saying that, the BBC no longer give a flying feck about cricket.

Both Vardy and Root should be on the list. In place of Bronze and the gymnast.

I do wonder sometimes if AKCJ would be so for Vardy if he wasn't playing for Leicester...

    I absolutely would.

This is someone who has gone from non-league football to breaking a longstanding record in one of the biggest leagues in world football... with Leicester City... in 4 years. It's a stupidly impressive achievement.

That female footballer, if she makes the shortlist, will get a high percentage of her votes from people who had never heard of her before the time for voting. In other words, women who don't follow football will vote for her.

I reckon Andy Murray will win team of the year.

I'm pretty sure she will make the shortlist that she's already made.
